They assu med (or h oped) that the conditions would be the same the day of the event. Next, they didn't attempt to ride at the schedule speed, but rather took the total time it required o ne of them to ride a section and divided it into the distan ce between the checks to get an average. This procedure gives a higher average than the competitor can maintain. Lastly, their calibrating speedometer was off in a direction which made the real speed to be averaged higher than the "paper" speed, according to Bob Steffan. Since this club has some of the most experienced people in the desert doing th e I ayout and something of a reputation for laying out "ego-trip" endures, one finds their claim of "slight error in judgement" requires arduous mastication. The course marking, as far as I can de termin e from talking to the better rid ers and what I rode of it myself, was probab ly adeq uate - barely . Quite a number of ri ders got lost including J ay T ullis' entire Honda team and Mike Adams from the Penton team. Th e Bultaco team of Steffan, Hoffer and Hannon missed so me tu rns but di dn't get badly lost. None of the riders with whom I talked regarded the danger marking as adequate. First, there just wasn't enough of it, especially considering the speeds require d to maintain the averages. One arrow (all there was at this point) was kicked down and resulted in Stan Baldwin sailing, without warning, off a 12·foot embankme nt. He was hurt badly enough to have to quit the even t, but not (as ru mored) to require h osp italizati o n . Many riders felt that the club simply didn't dangermark the course in the second direction, the way it was ridden Sunday . The course was supposed to be the same both days but it wasn't quite. On the second day the riders were routed down a hill that was nick-named the "elevator." This was a very long hill, dropping 800 to 1000 feet in something less than half-a-mile. The first two hundred yards co nst it u ted one of the most dangerous things I've ever -seen in an enduro. The surface was loose, jagged rock, mostly baseball to bowling-ball size , and the hill was so loose and steep that it was almost impossible to walK· up. The first two riders down we re the CEA riders who were pre-riding the course. One of them fell several times ge t ti ng down, and that set the pattern. At least 50 p erc en t of th e riders from then on fell at least once. Relatively few attempted to ride d own an d those who di d were scary to wa tc h because th er e was no semblance of co ntro l. Once a bi ke started rolling, it was going to accelera te to at least 40 mph unless it cras hed. And the crashes, ove r the bars, down hill , into the rocks, were hard . Even the guys who bulldogged it (and lots of very good riders including Dave Evans did just that) took some bad spills . One guy slid about 50 feet while pinned under his bike.
