"Push Horace, we 've only go t 40 m iles to go . . . .. CaEsAr was ambitious By Ron Schneiders RANDSBURG, CAL., DEC . 14-15 The Last Chance Enduro was an ambitious project. The California Enduro Association is a club with only 10 active members, but they staged an enduro that was two days long and covered 236 miles, much of it in new, or at least fresh , territory. They also instituted a class for "C" riders. The no tion of a lie" rider class is not new . It's been proposed every year or so for the past I 0, but District 3 7 has steadfastly resisted the notion until just recently when it be came painfully Do n't ask me how, bu t one second after I sn app ed this o ne th e guy almost ran o ver me. I'm no t sure what the other two guys were d oing. 10 obvious that unless something was done to encourage new riders, the District enduros were going to follow the time-honored tracks of Catalina and Big Bear into oblivion. The announcement of a "C" class had an immediate effect. The CEA had about 410 entries for its two-day event as opposed to about 230 for the last District en duro. Abo ut 51 %, including "C" and Sunday-Only riders, finished . The "C" riders ro de the first loop each day, a distance of about 62 miles , over terrain that was neither very easy nor imp ossible. From what I saw of it, I would say it was slightly more difficult than the average second loop of a famil y enduro . The schedules, however, were not in any way designed for "C" riders and in fac t several "A" riders to ld me that they had to really h ustl e to keep on time. The course went in a generally west-southwest direction fr om the pits just outside of Randsburg toward the Rand Mountains and back again . The loop was the same bo th days but was ridden backwards on Sunday. The second loop was designated as only fo r " B" and "An riders and it was on this lo op that thi ngs went slightly wro ng . This lo op was about 62 miles long and nobody could hold th e schedule. I came close to getting a universal quotation: " It was a great hare and hound." In setting the schedules the club made three mistakes. First, they rode the course two weeks ago , when it was set . With excellent tr action an d no d ust, Th is little guy was able t o rid e because they had a C Class. He ran o ut of steam and holl ered "Dad, Dad ! Wait for me! " But Dad wa s lo ng gon e.
