Lacking a good start he moved up t o second pl ace and almost ~assed even tual win ner David Nakao (Bul) at every co mer , but Nakao held on to the groove and never made the m ist a ke that Sauer needed a nd Chris h ad to settle for the second. After a length y del ay th at put both John McBroom a nd Mark Dever o u t for the nigh t with some mino r injuries, the restart of the 250 Novi ce cla ss saw Mik e Stark (YZ) jump to a go od lead over Bob De Fehr (H-D) and Hayden Campbell (a ss) . Star k a nd De Fehr maint ained their one-two pos iti on s. Campbell cam e out of the last co rn e r for the third and was cen te rp u nc h ed an d kick ed extremely hard b y Dan Martin o f Chico who had been warned previously of ro ugh riding and was bla ck flagged.
