It was a d eceptively difficult section, with a short up hill through rocks, a tight left tum and a quick drop off into sand. The riders co n tin ued on with an up hill into a sand pile with a quick left tum. Quote Gary Owens, "Number 10 was ridiculous, man y riders fived it." Nuff said! To finish off the loop, number II was all rocks, very tight turns, reasonably flat which forced a great need fo r delicate throttle control. In the "Hats Off Department " the tip has to go t o Mitzi Saylor, Reno, for being the only "Tootsie " in the trials. "Tough Luck" award must go to Gary Masculine, 16-year-old Amateur from Castro Valley High and Eas t Bay P.l .T .S. Gary got a little too happy on a wheelie in fifth gear, dropped the bike over backwards and cut both palms severely so that h e migh t have to miss the th ird round of the California State Trials. • Results in Results Section. Even with Frank Crane riding th e same Honda that Dave Hans on rode to win the American Indoor Championship, Crummett still lived up to his reputation of being "The Bad Man from Nevada." The local 250 Experts began to shudder a bit when they sa w Lonnie Ker1y lining up in t he heat race with a pole position, but as the main ro lled , Shane Scott aga in proved he was in complete control. It doesn 't seem to ma tter where he st arts , h e al ways ge ts first into the comer and keeps pu lling from the pack and is never even challenged. He took a decisive win on his YZ over Joe Boes on a Bultaco. • Results in Results Section. Still to come is the November 30 A.\1A annual meeting for ele ction o f Commissioner and Congressman, plus sanctioning of national points events. That's at Fairfield Holiday Inn, 9 a .m, Brother acts and other showbiz at Spillway By Michael Kr ikorian SANTA MARIA, CAL. NOV. 17 Randy Benda, Tom Bass and Ron Bass took the three Ex pert classes at today's District 35 motocro ss race at SpilIway Park in Santa Maria. It was the second race in a five race series at Spillway in which the top five pro racers will split at least S 1,000 at the end. The track, although mostly flat, is a good one offering many lines, a fine length, and fantastic traction. Unlike many southern California tracks, which towards the end of t he day are as hard packed as Wilshire Boulevard, Spillway maintained its lo amy traction throughout th e day 's races. In th e 125 Expert class Randy Benda (Hon ) took the win with two consistent second pl ac e finishes. He turned Expert a short time ago and altho ugh he is not up to the frenzied c.1\IC level of Bell an d Croft and Co . now, he will m os t likely _ be up there sho rtl y . In th e first moto he to o k a second behind Greg Reck, also on a Ho nda. Rec k was never headed during the race. The second 125 Ex pert m o t o was th e bes t race of the day. Benda to o k an early lead and was r eal ly sm o kin ', Bu t on t he fourth lap Stanley Clay (Hon) began p ressu rin g him and two laps la t er he passed Benda fo r the lead. Bend a appeared to be tiring but, determine d , he fought back to repass Clay with 10 minutes left in the 25 m inu t e moto. Clay h u ng on close but dropped out with bike problems a few laps later. Then Bill Keese on a Bultaco came up to challenge Benda. Keese, however , bad DNF'd the first moto so Benda let hi m by , knowing that his second would be go od en ough for the overall win . Second over al l was Larry Grier wi th Rocky Jones th ird, both on Hondas. Meanwhile, back in th e pack Sa mmy Holland was entertaining the crowd with the bigg est cas e of showboat riding since Torlief Hansen won the British Grand Prix. Every chance he had he would be in a big slide or a wheelie but his 'p iece de resistance' was on the big jump n ear th e start area. Just before the jump he would stand on his seat an d then kick his feet o ut as he sailed off the jump, proving that h e is o ne o f the few people 'in California who does Flying W's on purpose duri ng a 12 5 Expert ra ce . Sammy says it is a lo t of fun except when he lan ds o n the ta nk which d isco mforts him no little. The other Ex pert classes, 250 an d 500 , were ru n toge ther and it was strictly a family affair as the Bass Brothers, Tom a nd Ro n , took top ho nors. Brother Ro n (Ya m) easily won both motos of the 500 Expert fro m Sherm a n Sc hneller (Bul) a nd Jerry J o h nson (Mai). Brother Tom (Bul) won the 250 in similar style as Vincent Clar k (Mon) a nd Allen Griswold (Ya m ) to o k second an d third. . The Bass brothers were not t he on ly
