Northwest Rams Me imports secret weapon for Ram Bam 70 By Marty Gregory MU RPHY ; ID AHO , NOV. 10 Th e n ewl y-form ed chapter of the Ram s MC in Idaho staged its first desert rac e th is weekend and it was a good one! Former Hercules st ar wr en ch Tom Ruddy pretty much organize d th e Northwest or anch of the fam o us California :lub and eve n invited some of h is mends up fo r the race, Mark Ad ent, District 3 7 Number One olate holder in the 250 class , flat ran rway with the race held on the sage br ush-eo ver ed terrain near the Snake River. Adent blitzed h is 250 Hare Scrambler around the two 34 mile loops for a convincing win. Being a Ram m emb er h im self, Adent didn 't mind win ni ng this o ne a bit! It wasn 't exactly a cherry pic k , tho ugh as Adent had so me m igh ty fast . co m petition from Preston Gerber and Dave Blay loc k ab o ard a co upl e of the quic kes t Bultacos ever to come o u t o f Utah . Adent led from th e smoke bomb on but Blaylock was on ly a m inute or so behind him and Gerber maintained a similar distance b eh ind Blaylo ck. The only local rider to kee p the pace was Boise fireman Dave Newell (H us ) who was berser king ac ros s the whoopdies in fourth place. Adent's front skin suffered an attac k of puncturitis somewhere before the halfway point and he was forced to do giant wheelies down the sandwashes t o keep the bike in shap e. A super-fast pi t stop by Mark's exp erien ced cre w kept his advantage over Blaylock a t a maximum and th e Penton finished about a m inute ahead of the nearest Bultaco. Pre ston Gerber and Dave Newell wound up in third and fourth respectively. When eve ryone else who co uld m ake it dragged in off th e co u rse, 129 riders were in line fo r finisher pins, out o f 168 starters . The fairly high ra tio o f finish er s pointed to a fu n co urse d esigned b y th e local Rams. T om Ruddy (who used t o tune Ad en t's m ach in es), his go o d buddy Aaron Jeppson a nd th e rest o f th e No rthwest Rams did a neat layout an d a sm ooth program. The event was a Id aho Motorcyclist s a n c ti on ed Asso cia t ion points run a nd most of th e state 's cross co untry freaks turned out. Big Bob Sw ar d (wi nner o f th e 1974 Jackra1l bit 100 ) h ad h is share of problems and wo und up n in th overall on his Yamaha YZM. Bob says it doesn 't work too good in th e d esert. Bud Sparks (Ho n ) rode li ke he usually do es (WFO!) an d t oo k hi s 12 5 to fif th ov erall a nd a clas s win. The Yam ah as o f Llo yd Shawver a nd Ron Dillon were six th an d seventh. Runs at Murphy are always ro ugh and the Ram Bam 70 was no exception. Poor Preston Gerber sw apped his Curnutts for Konis and found th at they were go ing a way aft er 40 miles or so . Preston was seen pointing to the shocks and rubbing his posteri or. There's alway s a pretty righteous party after the races although it's fairly common knowledge that Ram members are all t ea totalers. Righ t ! The Pope is a Protestant, too. • Results in Results Section. • • fIJ Cycle N ew s Greeting Card Ads Don't send Christmas cards . . . reach 50,000 DGI ~ Seasoas $<--._ 1"'<'..... .m~~ Greetings ~ to our customers I~ & friends ~~' ~~~~;s;,ame, #1 fl"" _ Seasons~~~~ DGI ~ g Greetings ;... g to our customers & fri ends -q< r--. 01· ( Your name, address, ph on e no .] Ph ne no . )_ _ _ _o _ .-. #4 c<'l s-.
