Scally was the better of the t wo on the Oat stuff and on the IT track got by to unlap himself. But o n the rough MX trac k, Vanderpool could get him b ack and the two rode a good battle for about 10 minutes until Scally slid a little too much and hit a pole. He was only down a few seconds but it was the end of a go od dice. • Scally tops Riots , By W. H. Spencer SAN JOSE, CAL., NOV. 2 Robert Lee Scall y pUI all his fine indoor motions together in the right framework and led the 360 Expert Main from wire to wire. The line up for the main ha d Steve Foster and Scally side by side as they were in the first nigh t's run. The crashing and bashing in the first comer was similar to the firs t night's main, but one big difference was noted. Scally was in the lead and Foster was having troubles with the crew. The opener had seen Foster put Scal ly down and so me poor judgement by Scally to put Foster out but for tonight, the role was reversed and Foster had everybody after him. Ken Dalla rode second on the Pop Kenyon Honda but succu m b ed to move-overitis with Mike Faria taking sec o nd and holding it , while John T avis rode a new stock XL 350 to third with Foster recovering nicely to finish fourth over Marlin Stewart. Gary Cooper had been run over towards the en d of the Fremont short tra ck season and the b ad rumor people had him de ad within 24 hours. He proved them wrong in great st yle tonight with a well d eserved 360 Junior win o ver John Nunnes and last week's winner, Ed Heeney. The 250 Novice class was broken up into two divisions due to the large tum out in hopes of settling the nervous ones down and making for a better show. It didn't work and the B Main took three times to get started with Walt Gardiner survi ving the best to beat out Mike Gortz and Bill Miner while Manuel Ponte won his second straight trophy riding one of the ex -Mt, View Stereo Bultacos, In the little classes Fred Merkel co n tin u es to dominate the 80 Expert clas s which st ill runs 10 riders. Julie Muehlman surprised some of the boys in the 10 0 No-icc class with a very good win ove r Eddie Caballero an d Perry Egyes. Julie's father Bud made it good family operation by once agai n winning the 175 Novice Main over J im Patterson while Ron Sh after beat out Dave Reibin in the 200 Novice Main, The increase in riders in the few wee ks of running seems to be no problem in time and once again the event was done before I I p.m., so the mini bike class of 100cc is open to all 0-36 license holders. • Faust Hare Scrambles! The devil you say! By Terry D. Newfarmer FAUST,UTAH,NOV.2 Taking a chance on the arrival of th e first waves of winter, the Tooele Desert Striders hosted 110 riders to a fun hare scrambles on one of those days that is too chilly for standing around - but perfect for riding. And there was no dust. Racing for first overall was hot, as several riders with the mathematical possibility of winning the state n umb er one p late attempted to close the points gap on Prest o n Gerber, the leader a t last count. Laddie King took an early lead, but he was soon joined by Chris Mo rga n and Gerb er . King eve ntually dro p pe d a lit tl e off the pace, and Ge rber just see me d to settle back and watch Morgan ride which is a show, because Krazy Chris goes fast between mistakes. Dave Blaylock came next, not q u ite in contention. During the last of the four 20-mile loops, Gerber made his pl ay, to slip in just in front of the hard charging Morgan. With Gerber as first Open and Morgan as first 250, the next three places overall went to Open class riders King, Blaylock and Joel Quinn. Also a contender early in the race was Ken Ar chibald, but a few little troubles such as two fiat tires and a split gas tank put him a lap behind. Seventh overall and the 200 class eventually went to Mike Watters, after a hassle with a few others singing the "1 was ahead of h im and never saw hi m pass" song. Never were they specific on just what they were accusing Watters of. He had his ch ecks; and the course seemed as cut-proof as any we have had in recen t years. A characteristic of the course was that the Striders must have been careful not to wear in a trail along the mar ker s. Th e club used t ap e ins tead of pa per plates fo r markers , so getting lost was a possibiliry, but the race was a rari t y in that we followed markers, no t a beaten-in trail - a true cross-countr-y , The o ne exception was along the startflat to th e sm okebomb , th e worst place to have an established trail. The co urse was fun. It was perhaps a little heavy on sidehilling in the ro c ks, but we'll be there the next tim e the Striders have a race. • Results in Resul ts Section .
