Kisich waited fo r a mistake from Stanl ey, got wh at he was waiting fo r an d was no w in second spot. Leo n picked u p t he overall win with Stanley second, wh ile Bill Kisich with a sixth an d a second picked u p thi rd overall. Larry Gu rley (Mai) also swept both mo tos of the O pen Expert class. Gurley rode an especially consistent race never goi ng over h is head but just enough to stay ah ead of the co m petit io n . The main competitio n was Dave Robison (CZ) who in th e fi rst m oto never real ly got close eno ugh to Gurley to make a bid fo r th e lead. Robison was o ut for it in th e sec ond mo to as he jumped to an immediate lead. Gurley was righ t behind but Robison wasn't ab o u t to give in now. Towards the middle of the race Robison missed two im port an t shifts which left Gurley with an opportunit y to make.up m uch need ed time. Coming down the short straigh t Robison missed a gear again. That was all Gurley needed and he was b y for th e win. • Results in Res ults Section. The first ra ce was held Oct . 20 , 1974, with a large number of riders and spectators. Dunlap is lo cated 38 miles E. of Fresno in the foothills , with 8 0 0 acres of riding are a. It offers free cam p ing for riders and spectators. The track h as been co m pl etely re -worked, with th e course lined with sp rin klers . The 250 Expert class was full o f surprises as it appeared that Bultaco rider Mik e Miller had the race in the bag . But Shan e Scott (Ya m) pushed Mille r the entire distance and fo und the opening th at h e had been looking for o nly inches fro m the checkers to take the win . Steve Dietz aga in p ulled through for third place rid ing a 200 Bulta co . After a restart in the 250 Junio r class; Ray Hubbard took co n tro l of th e situation and was never even contested despite the efforts of Red Bluff's "Super Novice, " (no w Junior) Mike Hall (Bul) who managed t o hold on fo r second. The 250 Novice ac t ion was reall y wild as Mike Start (Y Z) took an early lead. About half th e pack had fall en down and those that remained on two wheels had a time a nd a half just trying to d odge those unfortunates . It wasn't real ly a tough eve n t, although some of the sections were set up a little close in co mers and made di ffi cult. Co ach Henry of Gunn High h as b een active in NorCaI P.I.T .S. and afte r some footwo rk wi th the school fan cy admin istra t io n , actual ly got th e ball ro lling with a course th at inclu des tri als ridi ng an d m otorcy cl e kno w-h ow. Getti ng th e co urse wasn't easy, even after convin cing the Principal and the Superintendent. The budget o utlay had been already sen t in and no new mo ni es co uld be added. A demonstrati on co nvi nced th e big kahunas th at th is th in g calle d tri als wasn 't motocross and no t at all no isy, so it was all o wed with 47 pupils meeting every other day for one and one-half hours. Almost 100 signed up fo r the 4 7 slots. It ap pears to be a success ful sho t w ith the lo cal newsp ap ers and even o ne TV st ation int erested in covering wh at is going on . Steve Kennedy had laid it down right in front of the sco ring tower twice, perhaps in hopes of becomin g a p ho togr aph ic hero , but to no avail. Best show o f the day we nt to Gary Vanderpool in the Open even t, not for winning it but for his ride up that morning from Clear Creek on the motor that he raced on. He refers to the 350 XL as hi s mountain motor and not his racer. Vanderpool led the entire di st an ce , rode it by himself and only stopped o nc e for abou t a gallo n of gas and a sip from a co ol on e. Scall y and Vanderpool h ad a good One . ..
