Ontario AMA PRO Double Header G BI Relaxation ti me for a winne r. Eyes front, Burrito, Nancy 's watching. (Continued from page 25) Novice, October 5th Skip Aksland led the Novice Final from the middle of the first lap onwards, but the real drama went on behind him as Dale Singleton of Dalton, Georgia drove from a second wave start ) to take second place. Singleton had not broken into the top lOin his qualifying heat. Aksland and Ken Botham of Vancouver, B.C. won their respective heats to land in the front row of the final grid. Murray Hoffman , who had trailed Botham i n their qualifier, be at everybody off the line and into the first co rn er , with Aksland, Botham, Whitney Blakeslee, and Ricardo Coundres tucked in behind . Aksland thrust himself into the lead down the infield straight and "quickly began to walk away with it, putting about a half second a lap on Botham, who in turn had cleared himself away from a scrambling, fairing-dust ing, place-swapping melee involving Hoffman, Coundres and Blakeslee. On the second lap, Singleton lay 14th after cu tting through early traffic like a shark through sardines. By the fifth, he had worked up into sixth positi on and was closing on the Hoffman/Coundres/Blakeslee bunch. In another circuit, while lapping slower traffic, he had slipped by all three to go into third. Meanwhile, Mike Baeder and Dave Racine had begun a back-and-forth duel whose momentum carried them up into the lead group. Racine passed Baeder one last time while Blakeslee overshot turn tw o, let Coundres by, then repassed him elsewhere on the course, Ra cine set his sights on Coundres, and as they shot off the banking side by side into turns one-two, they banged fairings sharply and rode each other off into the grass. Ra cine remained upright after some fan cy footwork and got back into the race two positions down, but Coundres got spit off before he could get stopped and was de tuned for the day. During all th e excitement, Singleton nipped by Botham and everybody settled down to finish. Skip Aksland never looked back - this was his last Novice road race ride, and he was • making the most of it. Results 1. Skip Aksland (Vam). 2. D a le Singleton (Vam). 3. Ken Botham (Yam). 4 .
