Koegler and Tim West changing the front 'po sitio n each lap, but in the Main he forgot to turn on the gas and seized. Castro led three laps but Spinazze wasn't to be denied another win on his favorite track . He took over on lap four and kept it. The 250 Novi ce Main got started three times with some horrendous crashing going on but no one getting badly hurt. An inline restart was finally cal led for with Rick Eklund at the fore over Jim Black, Rick Siote and Joe Hardy. As usual, the first lap of the restart had someone else in the lead and i( turned ou t to be the si xth man in the line, Paul Austin. No matter, on the next lap Hardy got by to take the win over Siote and Eklund with Black making it to the trophy line, but j ust barely. Mitch Magana led the whole eight laps in the 175 Novice Main but didn't look like he was going to be able to hold it as John Hegarty looked like he was ready to do the deed when on the sixth lap the gear box gave up the cause. This left the second spot open for Stan Slate. Scott Nelson took the first la p lead in the 360 Junior Main b ut got off the groove and eventua lly fell to fif th. Jo hn Tavis led t he second lap but Fre d Faltersack took t he last six with hi s ne w 360 Yamaha. Larry Silva had his hands full of John Kresha's twin but held him off with Eddie Diaz taking the last of six trophies. Robert Silva a nd Rodger Slack had a good duel in the 250 Junior with Silva taking th e m os t important lap alth o ugh Slack led the most. Pearson held the advantage for the 10 laps and actual ly pulled away from Eklund an d Wood leaving so me high signs be hind hi m as h e would cross the finis h line on each lap. Eklund got around the Bobby Cancilla Yamaha with Wood riding a very fine race. In the "B" portion of t hat 360 Expert class, Randy Gibbs and his newly acquired twin Yamaha took the win ove r Lowell Moural and AI Kenyon. Big AI rode one of his finest events of the year leading the fir st two laps on the Sonny Kenyon Bultaco with both Moural and Gibbs doing some hard charging. Moural got by Kenyon on lap three and Gibbs got him on me sixth go-round. The three stayed glued together for the last five laps and made it a hell of a race. Andy Whitaker and Ricky G raham were dicing for fourth and fifth at the ha lfway point and on the seventh lap they got a little too close a nd bailed in the firs t corner. T he red and checkered came out at the same time on the 10th lap and both riders wal ked away but after the race, a formal protest was filed against Ricky Graham for rough riding. Leonard Castro led off the 125 Novice Main with Gary Spinazze right behind and except for a poor start by Eddie Gonzales, this would have been a six man race to the finish. Gonzales put on a terrific race in the heat with Bernd combined to put on the finest speedway racing sh o w every seen here. After 24 events th at co uld have been a scratch main o n a ny other night of the season, Mike Bast, Bill y Gray and Sonny Nutter were eve n at three wins and nine points ea ch. Th e National Champion was riding with a specially fitted cas t on his left wri st and wh en these riders were called ou t to ru n o ff the tie, Mike chose not t o ride as th e wrist was giving him so m e problems. His fine sho win g earlier left no d oubt as to wh y he carries the number one o n h is ba ck. Billy Gray and Sonny Nutter put on a real battle in the tie breaker with the win and e xtra bonus money going to Sonny. Runner-up in points was fanner National Ch ampion Rick Woods with eight, followed b y two northern riders, Alan Christ ian a nd Norman Denny with seven. Danny Becker added four tonight for 2.; total, Steve six for 27, Scott Sivadge five for 25, Jeff Sexton .five for 24 and Steve Nutter three for 19. Billy Gray's nine points and 22 total moved him into fifth place in points for riders who have completed their qualifying. Mike Rooney now leads no rthern riders who have comple te d qualifying with 14 points . Alan Christian (10 points) and Norman Denny (eight points) will have five rides inthe fo urth and final round at Costa Mesa on October I I. Pending the o utcome of that meeting.
