Yet a BLM tabulation of a "rep res en ta ti ve cross section of p ublic co mments" shows ove r 88 % o f comments received on the general plan and 92% of comments on specific areas of the plan opposed as "too res trictive." The m e m o notes, however, that comments such as uthis land is our land " and "don't close th e desert, we go there often'.' were dis carded as "too general to be of value." 3 . Th e California Bureau of Land Management contracted an "expert" to inv entory a nd draft guidelines for the protection of Indian petroglyphs. His qualifi cations : free-lan a photographer, lec t u rer , college graduate with an Engli sh major and a minor in comparative religions. This "expert" recently informed Desert Maga zin e that their October ' 73 photograph of the petroglyphs at Woods Wash (San Bernardino Co unty) is now one of a kind, as . the petrogly phs had been vandalized, defaced, b lasted an d ha uled away.
