Schreiber tops Bogwheeler trials I By Lane Campbell POWAY . CAL., SEPT. 15 After trailing Marland Whaley by six points at the end of the first loop, Bernie Schreiber turned in two back-to-back two point rides of the nine trap circuit to take the Expert class by storm. Both he and Marland had dropped two fives apiece on the first loop in the jumbled, rocky sections. The Bogwheelers, in their first AMA points trial, had laid on a smorgasbord of boulders for Novices , Amateurs, and Experts alike. Reactions to the sections themselves were : "Wow !" "Unbelievable! " "111 be killed!" "Great fun." "Best traps I've ridden all year." The time allowance for four loops was six hours, and the sandbagging was heavy. Most riders admitted privately they could have completed the trial in three hours, so the time weighed most heavily on the poor checkers, who had to sit it out in the sun and eat clouds of dust. \ Greg Lersch sweated out the last Amateur on the course, fo r if Tony DiLabio, who was running quite late, came in with less than a nine point final loop, he would win the class. When Tony did ride in, it was With nineteen poin 15. "I even fived the last section," Tony said in self-reproach. "I was getting so excited about winning and thinking the last section was easy." Most of the competitors will agree after looking at their final scores, except for the time schedule, nothing about the Bogwheelers trial was "easy. " • Resul ts in the Resul 15 Section.
