Hocking tops Rice By W.H. Spencer SAN J OS E, CAL., SEPT. 2 Rick Hocking tu rned o ut to be the to ughes t Exper t in to day's an nual Labor Day pr o races with Alex J orgensen breezing to the J un ior Final win an d Scott Pearson up setti ng th e Novice applecart with some contro versial starts an d a win in the Novice eight lap per. A mo rning ove rcast kept th e fa med Harold Murre ll t rack wet in the early ru ns, but it was a fast a fternoon as J o rgens en to ppe d J im Rice 's fast qu alifying time in the J unior final. Rick took fas t time, to no o ne's surprise, with J im Jones of Washington the seco nd fastest over Ed Wir th and Hoc king. Terry Sage led the first lap of the first Expert Heat with Rice following for three laps and Tom White taggi ng along behind gentleman Jim. Rice took the lead on the fourth with Sage hanging on to second and White beating out Bob Sanders and Wirth. Hocking had no trouble with the second Heat. Jorgensen had topped the Junior qualifying by nearly a half second and the first Heat turned into a battle with Art Fredenberg. T he two No. 62 riders crossed the finish line in their usual order with Dennis Robinson working up to thi rd. Matt Falconer made a rare appearance and led the second heat for th ree laps over Bruce Hanlon and his mighty Harley with lIanlon taking the last three in fine sideways style. The eight lap Novice Main was brought back to the start line after rookie starter Mike VanLienden decided tha t Pearson had dr op ped the hamm er just a li tt le too soon and j ust a little to far behind the start line . Pearson h ad been practicing th is at t he Wednesday night ser ies at Fremo nt and had been caught once with the same result. a red flag and a restart. Just like the Fremont episode, he came right back to the fronl row and promptly dropped the hammer about two feet behind the line instead of three. He was the first m an inl o the first turn again but not q uite so far in the lead. Mo ural h eld second for th e first lap bu t dropped off th e pace by getting off the groove. Pat Gu th rie moved up to second with Eklund sandwichi ng in between, jus t in fro n t of Chuc k Miller. Pearson still ha d a healthy lea d after four lap s but Eklund had gotten into thir d . Guthrie an d Miller kept derbying to keep th e slim crowd enth ral led . Pearso n won by ab o ut two b ike lengths and some verbal protesting immed iately f o llowed. So me p eople, including Ekl und's sponsors, tho ug ht th at Pearson sh ould have b een relegated to th e back row, but referee Walt Masterson see med to have it settled by the end of t he payoff. Alex J orgen sen literally ran off with th e J unio r Main winning with a fo ur and a hal f secon d m argi n o f victory an d in half-mil e terminology , that is about a straight away. J orgy has some very nat ural racing m o ves and m an aged to tu rn a faster lap in the middle of the Mai n than Rice 's qualifying time. The 15 lap Expert Main was m ere ly a choice between Hocking and Rice with J im havi ng taken th e deed to the track so me years back. most though t he wo uld win and even though Hoc kin g to ok th e lead at th e onset it was forgeone that Rice wo uld m er ely wait fo r t he prop er moment. take the lead an d win. Hoc king ha d so mething to say about all this an d he was hot. Each lap the two would pul l just a little far the r away from th e pack th at had Jim J on es leading Pat McC au l an d Sage. Going in to th e num ber t hree turn Hocking seem ed to be able to dr op in deeper susp ecti ng all th e ti me tha t Rice was still favori ng his left knee that was injured at Asco t som e weeks hen c e. Coming off the number four co rne r Hocking seemed to have a litt le better tire and those t wo seem s adde d up to a win . On th e seve n th go- ro und McCaul go t wid e off the groove in the first turn in th e wild est scene of the Main, allowing Wirth to m ove in to fo urth behind Sanders an d Paul Bostrom to ta ke ove r fro m Sage.
