By Jim Ste wart LUCERNE, CAL., SEPT. 15 Not the usual Hare and Hound or point-to-point race, the Prospectors Me used a little .of both types of desert event's to put on one of the best Hare and Hounds this year. First, riders made a 40·mile -loop through Lucerne, gassed up, then headed for the SviiffBfSl1iffeE SA MMY TANNER DISTRIBUTING Hey, th ese guys are cheating. They've sprouted an extra wheel. Being a Hare and Hound, there was a bike-riding rabbit at the start and finish. Overall winner Mitch Mayes snatched the rabbit's (alias Allen Lund) tail after getting the checkered flag. Shortly after nin e, Mitch Mayes and .~. Kevin Hasten were in close battle going . past the bomb. Fo llowing, and locked in their own battle, were Tom Brooks on a borrowed Bul and Jack Johnson, a pie-plater on the monoshock Yamaha from Nevada. Past the bomb, Mayes started pulling away from Hasten, when Kevin started riding very erratically, staying up with Mitch for awhile , but hitting every pucker bush and hole while riding in Mayes' blinding dust. Mayes finished with more than a three-minute lead, finding the Baja gearing on his Husky suitable to the fast last 20 or so miles. Hasten held the second overall position, aboard his CMC sponsored CZ . Jack Johnson, finding his monoshock Yamaha favorable to the desert, came back to finish first 250 Expert at third overall. But since: Johnson was .en te red as a pie plater, he will not receive the pain ts for his win. Instead the first will go to Cordis Brooks, who finished behind J ack at fourth overall. This is Cordis' fourth straight 250 class win, making his cha nc es for a number one look a lot 'b etter after being out for awhile with a broken shoulder. Consistent A.C. Bakken rode in for fifth overall, third open Expert. Following in A.C.'s dust was Benny Padilla, who picked up the second spot in the 250 Expert class . Benny gave up riding his Gringo, after not being able to keep it together long enough to finish . Now he is back on a Yamaha, the same brand that carried him to his number six in the 250 class last year. The next two 250 Experts to finish are also always listed with the top 250 Experts in past results because of their high finis hes . Jeff Kirk and Charles Gates were third and fourth 250 Experts, at seventh and ninth overall. Sandwiched between Kirk and Gates was the first Amateur Dan Dawson on a 250 Yamaha. Second Amateur and also the same in the 250 class was Robert Wadlow, who was tearing up the Novices a few months ba ck. Meanwhile Ed Rodine finished third 250 Amateur, pi cking up another transfer toward his red sticker. It won't be long until he becomes Expert. Not having a bike of his own, Tom Brooks borrowed a Bul and went fas t to 10th overall, fifth 250 Expert. Sponsors must be few and far between, like the checks this weekend, as Tom last year was blowing everyone off on a 125 DKW. Following the older of the Brooks brothers was Birdi e and his Bul for sixth in the same class. Dean Modcsset and Andy Kirker have o ne main thing in co mm on , both are after th e number one plate in the
