~~ Coast Mota Cycle CMC Ascot . By Alan She pherd ® GARDENA, CAL. , SEPT. II With less than a month left or the Ascot calendar for CMC motocross, and school back into session, the turnout dwindled tonight, but the racing was still tight. Mike Bell and Joe Johnston gave a show in the 125-250 combined Pro event with Joe on the 250cc Oss a winning out against Bell on the I25cc Honda. All three motos were identical. Brad Morrison, on a 250cc Bultaco, would jump to the lead with Bell in hot pursuit. Then Johnston would car een through the pack, take over third and close quickl y. Bell would then find a way around Morrison, skip to the lead and Johnston would then fo llow suit by picking off second. It remained that way for two or th ree laps, then Joe wo uld creep up and suddenly pounce on Bell, slipping by and going on to a narrow victory . In the separate scoring, however, each rider swept his respective class . And for Bell it was rather inspiring. A week ago Sunday, he crashed at Saddleback and was promptly smacked by Bruce McDougal. His righ t arm ached, but he continued to ride out the event. Then, last week, he again got off hard right at Ascot and when he went to the doctor he found he h ad a partial fracture in the shoulder. He was told not to race for three weeks. He rested for the remainder of the week. but was back again tonight and looking like his old self . . . and winning his 18th in the last 21 CMC night meetings. Don Bongirorno (Han) picked up the runnerup spot in the I25s but was never in co n ten tio n. Morrison, meanwhile, who did have a chance, had to settle for second 250.
