Fremont short track By W. H. Spencer FRE:ltONT, CAL.. AUG. 21 Rick Delacy's win in the 250 Expert Main and Scot! Pearso n 's seco nd straight win in the 360 E x pert Main highligh ted this Wed nesda y night short trac k at Fremont Raceway. Pearson 's win was his best main event ride; Scott go t two goo d starts in the Main off new star ter Jim Williamson and Jim 's only comment was he had better not try th at next week. The two star ts were ca used by a red flag brought out by Williamson when he decided that he had given Pearson too good of a start. No matter, the second green saw the same black Kaw go into the corner in first position fo llowed closely by Steve Carrillo an d Lowell Moural. Moural hel d second afte r getting by Carri llo . T he n Carrillo got a drive o n him o n lap four and Steve chased Pearso n but to no avail. It was old man's day in th e 360 No vice with three o ver t he hill guys in fron t. Tom Ko lodzies ki took th e win fro m Do n Si lveira after Mike Starn es went off for a free ride to the hosp ital, luckily wi th on ly m ino r inj uries. Jim Meyers took third on the no isiest Ho n da in existence and all three guys did good. Ric k Delacy won yet another Main in the 2 50 Ex pert class with Mike' Faria the o nly rider doi ng any close chasing. Brian T hom pson nip ped o ut Steve Lucero in the 80 Expert whi le Mike Randal won the Junior again. Spence won his .Heat w ith ease an d at t he start o f th e Main , h e appeare d to have every th ing under co ntrol even t ho ug h in th ird spo t. Fran k Sanc hez led the firs t lap with Bob Masters' second gi ving th e firs t three spo ts to ol d tim ers. On th e seco nd lap goi ng t hrough th e infi eld Masters got Sanch e z as d id Sp en ce. On th e fourth Spence go t by Maste rs. Danney Hogu e was no w hust ling past the troo ps and came up on Spence on the sixt h go ·round. He got by fo r th e win when Spence lost a cam foll ow er. Spencer F RE~ IONT, CAL., AUG . 25 Five riders were running o n t he last lap together in t he 125 portion of Marath on Madn ess at Fre mo n t Racewa y: Noel Bilsk i tea med with usual partn er Jim Carlisle to ok th eir first win with Ken Pace and J im Moi ra jus t scan t feet behind th em , and Jim Willis teamed wi th J a ck Sparrow rounding o ut the first th ree, all up on Elsinore Ho nda s. Pace led out with Sparrow and Mike Peavle r close in. A I Wood and the super Hoda ka team worked up to th ird on the four th lap and event ua lly in to th e lead by lap 12 whe n Pace had som e tr o ubl es. T he Spa rrow /Moita team had a good d uel with t he Billy Risner Husky for a few laps but as usua l, Jeff Cole came right o n by and on the 22nd lap , he too k t he lead fro m Wood who was once again having troubles with pitching chai ns. AI finally call ed it a day on the 31st lap pu t tin g the Bilski /Carlis le team i n a fir m seco n d s pot with Sparro w /Willis still in thi rd ove r Ron Carroll andJohn Taviscj r, Carroll was putting on qu ite a sho w desp it e ha ving gotten off fairl y hard. He go t off o ne m ore tim e j us t before t he end and it cos t them a fo ur th place. AI Ken yo n teamed wi th Rich Locke on a 175 Can -Am to win th e 2 50 overall with only o ne o t her bike on th e sa me lap. It starte d o ut as a tw o ma n batt le with AI and Wayne Morrill doing th e thing o ver the new track th at had a motocross secti on added. It was to Morrill's liking and after leading lap s two through si x, Al moved over for t he long, lanky motocross dude. Morri ll led the seventh t hro ugh th e 14th lap , then pi lied to change riders with Dale Et chis on and bend the shif ter to where it was usable. Kenyon took on e more lap an d then gave o ver to Locke, a former pro from the earl y 60s 's, The race became so mew ha t topsy-t ur vy from the 20 th lap when J oh n Silva and h is s uper fas t Bultac o came into t he p icture, teamed with Bob Scall y. As the tw o would chan ge riders, so would Kenyon and Lo cke and with Silva leading fro m lap 23 through 30 and the n AI leading from 3 1 to 3 6 and it was o b vious t ha t Scall y was getting th e short end and his tw o hour run in th e 125 class didn't help his st reng th any . On the 43rd lap , Kenyon and the trus ty Can-A m too k the lead for go od . With the Bult aco firml y in tow, th e t wo pulled a o ne lap lead o ve r the 3 8 rid er field. Mike Peavler paced th e 30 team Op en fie ld for tw o lap s an d then Frank Risner and his tr ust y 35 0 XL Honda too k a co m m an ding iead. A good dice developed between the Risner brothers and Aust in wh o had a little help fr om Sha un Scarlett, the yo unges t an d po ssibl y the best of three brother bunch. But nobody was ab le to ca tch Moural as he went on for his second win at Cycleland in th e last two weeks. At the first corner of the 250 Expert Main it was Cliff Hyl ton (Yam) an d J im Hubb ard (Yam ) side b y side, but Cliff go t the insid e lin e and pulled o ut th e lead. J im Hubbard in second o n a larger b ike (Hy lt o n was o n a 175) kep t tr ying to ge t around as he was never more than a wh eel awa y from th e lead.
