th e start of the Scratch Mai n and
instantly pulled out a lead on Dick
Crosb y (Bul) and Reno rider Jeff Smith.
Crosby hel d o n fo r second in his first
250 race of the year and Sm ith was
third. anot her trop hy for the much
traveling Novice,
Dan Fowler (Yam) jumped to the
lea d at t he start of the 100 Novice Main.
Fow ler gave it up to T om Green afte r a
fe w lap s, an d J uni or rider Ken Gray
fo ur-s troked his way into third on his
Honda afte r working his way up fro m a
20 yard han di cap.
In th e 25 0 Expert class it was Cliff
Hylton at th e start with Jim Hub ba rd
secon d. T he two riders battled it o ut for
th e entire race. Hubb ard t ried on th e
insid e an d Hyl ton
o uts ide , the
co nt in ued to sh ut t he d oor. With Hyl ton
leadi ng and Hub bar d j ust inc hes behind
the two riders ca m e o ut o f th e last
comer side by side with th e win goi ng
to Hubbard. From man y angles it
loo ked like Hylt on wo n . Even J im
Hu bbard sai d he didn 't win , bu t t he ref
stuck t o his de cision .

When No rm an Denny an d Alan
Chris tian ca me o ut for their third race
of the nigh t, bo th riders had pe rfect
scores. The "inne r of t his event, Alan
Christian, appeare d to have the Wine
Cup title se we d up after No rman lost a
rear axle nut and scored no poin 15.
Cunnin gham and Ch ristian me t in t he
fo urth ro un d and in this race Chris tian
went down in tu rn o ne. Cunningham
sco red three p o in ts and Christian a zero.
Event 17 had Norm Denn y winning
ahead of Rich MacM ur ra y an d at this
po int, both of these riders were even at
12 points each .
T he next eve nt had Barclav Tre hal
tryi ng very hard to w in , but set tling for
second beh ind J ohn Cu nningh am . T he
three po in t finis h gave Cunnin gham a
total of 13 points for the eveni ng and
the champio nship.

his 12 p o in t total put him in a ti e with
MacMurray and Den ny fo r second p la ce.

Treh a! and Pau l Orlandi with 10 p oin ts
eac h.
Along wit h the twent y scra tc h races
for the ch am p ions hip, Napa also had a
full handicap program for fi rst d ivisio n
riders. Ron Lo ng wo n th e Handi cap
Main ahead of Barclay Trehal an d Russ
Pow ell.
