The last regular Speedway show of th e 1974 season turned into a traged y Wednesda y night when , in the Handicap Main, Mike Bast laid h is bike down in a true display o f spo rtsmans hip to keep fro m run ni ng in t o fallen Jim Fishback. Jim had slid out and was tied up in his bik e . Steve Bast threw his bik e down to the o utside, cr ashi ng hard. With the help of the am bul an ce cre w, he go t up an d rushed to his brother's aid. Mike was doubled up with pain and fo r some time no one knew where he was hurt: shoulder, groin or arm. After some time Mike was helped to the pits with a badly broken wrist. His ar m was put in splints and he was taken to a bone specialist in Van Nuys, Calif. wh en it was dis covered that they could not be set . The pieces of bone will h ave to knit slightl y before the wrist can be set. T h is crash will keep Mike from defending his ti tie at Bakersfield this coming Wednesday night and the California Sta te Championship will be up for gr abs. He wa s se t to ride in th e fir st qua lifyi ng round Thursday night, Sept. 5, but will miss that as well. Ther e is so me hope, however , th a t he may get to ride to defend the O.S . t itle in November, but it will take special c o n si deration fr om the Speedway Racing Association. T he SRA has a little used rul e about no t riding with a cast or wi th ou t a wr itt en release from a doc to r sta ting th e rider is fi t to ra ce. Before the cras h Mike had wo r ked his way in to both Main events and, of course, was no t in th e restart of the Handicap Main whi ch was wo n by Dave Sims. Spee dway Cha m pionships. T he to p 32 riders in total points competed in th e 24 events wi th each rider going in three even ts. All events were scratch races with a win good for three points. At the end of the evening there were four riders tied with a perfect score of nine points : Jeff Sexton, Steve Bast, Dan Becker and Larry Shaw. KBBQ and KBBY radio night at the races was a super success with several of. the top DJ s getting into the halftime show on Yamaha bicycles. Th e place cardiac city at - th e two -lap even t, whi ch how far o ut of shape lo ok ed like end of th e pro ved just yo u can get sit ting be hind a desk all day. It was a lot of fun an d nobody was hurt, b ut the heavy breathing w ould have mad e a great "sto p sm o kin g" ad.
