Art Friedman, hot from winning $ I 00 two wee ks earl ier in Oregon, was hoping he co uld bu y Team Purple Toad dinner with a borrowed stock-everything 200 Yamaha equipped with the miracle ingredient, "seizure." He couldn't. Dave Boida hoped to be at the dirt bikes he despises on tarmac. He di d , but it wasn't enough . Jo hn Hewitt was the spoiler of m an y plans , sha t t e ring confidence and cockiness with one quic k Yamaha. It started o ut that wa y , too. He wi tt helped him self to t he fir st turn, p urs ued b y St eve McKe nnan (Ya m), Lim , Bo ido, a Yamaha 125 Enduro bike , and o n e tr ic ked -out, ove r-je tted-t o-stop-ch ronicmultiple-seizures DKW springer 12 5. Fried man, Associate Editor of Cycle Guide, p assed five fellows in t he firs t th ree turns to m ove into th ird as Hewitt sta rte d lea ving · imm ed iately. By the sec ond circ uit it was Friedm an seco nd and McK ennan th ird , trailed by o the r 200s. T homas Maguire , ridi ng a Bill Silver Replica Honda CB 125, showed he knew his way aro un d Orange Coun ty by promp tly eating up the ho le sh o ts o f Lim, the Dee k rider, an d everyone else behin d Boido by go ing faster throug h the turns. The fro nt running 200s se t tled in to their places wh ile Maguire p ulled several hundred feet on the ne xt 125, currently engaged in a d uel with Lim. Lim had the power, the accurate carburetion, and t he dr ive t o smoke the d irty DKW in every straight an d sem i-straight section , but exi ted T um Four too tightly to avo id bei ng p assed th ree times in four laps en te ring T um Five. De tuned b y having ex pe ns ively blown a 3 50 in his las t rac e, Li m sub sequently slo wed to di ce with J im Lester 's Yamaha RD 12 5, but only afte r unwi t tingly he lp ing t o determine the o utcome of t he 125 Producti on race . When Lim was ' in fron t of the eventu al 125 cl ass winner, his slip stream b oos te d t he maximum sixth-gear RPM of t he burbling Germ an wo nder just enough t o fi nally loosen it up wh ile it was getting enough cooling air t o kee p fr om sticking again. T he sluggish seizure s peci al su d de n ly s urged see ki ng satisfac tio n , closed th e gap on Mag uire in two lap s, p assed t o take over th e 125 lead, wo ve all over t he f ro n t straigh t t o shake Magui re's slipstr eam in g, str etc hed it' out, an d crossed the fin ish spu ttering , gagging, and almost sticking m ost of t he way - but doing it q uic kly . Maguire's· fine lines remained, but his h o rsep ower hid, letting Lim and Lester m o ve pas t out of the last t urn of the las t lap . Hewit t co llec te d hi s dollars an d his trophy, Magui re lam en ted the de m ise of his we ll-deserve d victory, and the DKW we n t back to th e emery cl oth and ho ne in sear ch of stock clearances .
