Late season rush at Benton Lane Short Track By Shirley Campbell JUNCTIOi': CITY, ORE.. AUG. Ii It was quite an evening of racing, The riders were more than rcadv and rnanv found out what a sec ond and third row start was. Time is running out in the high points battle with the season of flat track co ming to an end. I n the 100 A Main, Bob o ..... Skolaski (Yam) took off like a shot and the lead with John Wincewicz (Han) and Tom McCullough (Yam) staying within striking distance. Wincewicz made it very u nco m fortable for Skolaski but t hat was all. Skolaski also won the Trophy Dash. Dick Asa (Kaw) go t the start he wanted in the 250 A Main to put him up front. Once he got there he had to hold off the challenge of Lester Huey (Suz) which wasn't tha t easy. lluey was on his fender all t he way b ut had to settle for se cond. Charles Stan deford was third. Huey won the Trophy Dash. The final event was the Open A Main, Lester Huey (Suz), coming off the se co nd - line, shot through a hole somewhere and was first to the comer. By Mik e Conway RENO PARK, NV., AUG. 18 Reno Park 's new half-mi le IT track looks to be a good one. The surface is a cushion and the track is wide with ban ked comers. The straight ends wit h a wide sweeper, then a left to the jump. After the jump a short straight leads into a fairly hard righ t then onto a short st raight and another left onto the sweeper and back down the long straight. Abo ut i 5 ri ders showed up to try the new track and most everyone found it to their liking. Jay Gardner had the honor of carting hom e the firs t brass wi th a wire to wire win in the 125 Amateur/Novice Main followed by John DuPrat on a Penton. A lot of riders welcomed the chance to again become Novices, eve n tho ugh they are classed as Juniors in short track . John Sargeant led the 175/200 riders. A good start and a lot of beans enabled him to steadily open his lead over Lee Roberts who took some soil samples while running second. Roberts' place was taken by Martin T royan a Bultaco, ~I ike LupoId and Montie Martin waged the best battle of the afternoon in the 250 Amateur class. The two riders passe d and rep assed each other continually for the first three laps. LupoId pulled ahead to stay and Martin fell trying to catch him on the fifth lap . Their heated battle p ulled them well ahead of the rest of the pack. J 0 h n Munson was pressured the whole 250 Expert Final by Doug Smith who came all the way f rom June Lake to check out the track. He seemed to like it but not as well as Munson who held onto first. In the 360-0pen Expert Final Charlie Stewart turned a few heads as he slammed his Norton into the first comer a head o f Manuel Cru m mett and proceeded to open up ground on every lap . The trophy das hes wer e held o n t he ha lf-m ile ova l. Some of t he riders liked this so much th at there are a co uple o f half-miles in the works for t he near future . Randy Quick beat Jerry Koffler i n the 360-0pcn Junior Dash an d Manuel Crummett too k the 360-0pen Expert honors. • Results in Results Section. "Mfg. by U.S. Sports $99.50 the n moved in to challenge Huey an d took over the lead.
