At least a third of them dropped o ut by t he third moto for o ne reason o r an other. Strange ly, the Old Timers had the biggest percentage o f finishers . All 19 finished the first two rn oto s and 14 finished the t hird . Dennis ~IcCarty won the first two but co uldn ' t get his bike going fo r t he thi rd. Bill Naylor (CZ) 'aggra va ted an old injury and fai led to start th e final race. Jim Newman (~Iai ) cam e from dead last in the seco nd to go Dave Shep herd (250 Int .l learns about fly ing in inst ru ment weather. Chuc k Su n took all th e big money in th e 250 and O pen Pro races. He no t o n ly showed he 's no t a fair weath er racer - he showed he can co me from be hind. In t he first Open race Sun tangled with Ma ntey Mitch ell (Mai) o n th e scr atch and they were th e las t to get goi ng. Kyle Larreau (Hus) ha d t he lead unti l he d um ped i t and Mat t J ames (Mai) moved in to lead the pack wit h his broken fron t fender flo pping all th e way to the flag. Sun led all the way in the other t wo motos . After winning the first 250 race with a huge lead, Sun dumped it in the second co r ner on the start of round two. Barney Newman (Ma n) parked his front wheel under the Bul's rear fender and they were last going. Chuck really cran ked it on and moved into the lead on th e third lap ! Rerouting a ro un d the big hill ca used some co n fusio n. Greg Gainer (Yam) appa rentl y didn't get the word in the final 250 Interm edi ate race. He was in the lead until he, alo ne , went up the hill and tr ansferred himself immediately to last by the time he go t down. He worked up to third a t the finis h bu t John Chamberlain (Mai] took t he big hardware home. The 250 Juniors did ride the hill on t he final ro und - rat her t hay tr ied to ride it. Kim Williams (Ya m) narro wly missed a cross -co nn try tro p hy when he so ught a ne w approach to the to p. Afte r severa l uns uccessful sta bs a t t he slimy track, he took off throug h the rocks an d trees looking fo r th e lap . He never fo und it. li e said all he fou nd was Mike Sutherland (li o n ) hanging onto a tree up t here. T he y fini she d 12th an d 13 t h for t hat race but it was Suthe rland, J im Camp ( ~ I a i ) and Williams for the day . • Results in Results Section.
