Bruce Hanlon was the hottest and Dan McWhorter finally repeated what he has been trying to do again for over three months. For the third time this year the Juniors got a shot at some of the Experts and for the second time in three tries it was a Junior winning it all. The Junior, of course, was Skip Aksland. Be again led t he time trial pa rade with a m idd Ie twenty-two second clocking before dusting off vet eran Ron Moore in the Beat race with the fas t five lap per of the nigh t. Devon Sowell made a game last lap attempt to win his second straight Trophy Dash but failed to catch Aksland on the final turn. Brian LaPlante ran t hird an d was never a contender after taking t he only other twenty-two second lap in time trials. The second big bore Beat of the nigh i was some type of destruction derby with Experts and Juniors running into and over each other from the start until the officials finally put a stop to it with one lap left to go. Tony Dell was " awarded" the win. The topper came when Dell and Dennis Briggs ran into e a ch other. locked handlebars and dragged ea ch other through the first turn. Briggs finally fen off. The finale in the Beat races cam e in the fourth Heat when Junior Bruce Hanlon tried to win it all on the first lap and bull-dogged his Harley into the ground coming on the front chute on the first lap. As soon as rider and machine stopped sliding the bike caught on fire . Quick work by the officials had the flame out in less than a minute with the machine covered with t he white stuff. T he crashes did not en d there. In the big bike Semi Expert Chuck Bart ran into the back of Junior Jeff Co leman and high-sid ed all t he way into the hay bales on t he first turn. As in many o ther spills by Bart, he eventua lly d ug h is way out and walked to the p its with the win awarded to Mike Clark. Aks land made short work of the Final, taking the lead away from Sowell o n the second lap and going on for his t h ird straight Main Even t w in and second ' straight decision agai nst t he Experts. Sowell. who crashed a week ago. this time dropped out with mechanical troubles on the third lap while running in the top three. The early bps 100ked as though DeWayne Keeter an d Ron Moore were going to give Aksland a run. Both were blown off by Junior Tom Berry, who turned in his best ride of the seas on and his smoothest since climbing on a big bike last April. Berry got by Moore for third o n lap eleven and then Keeler on lap twelve. but he was too lat e in an attempt to catch Skip.
