Cyce ort ews Flying bods and sabotage in Chico NorCal Speedway Christian and McGill at Expo, Rooney and Corder take Napa By Rex Backman CHICO, CAL.,JULY 20 Roland ' Eskew and his trusty Yamaha got the holeshot at the start of the 250 Expert Scratch Main, pulling out a large lead. By Sneaky Pete SACRAMENTO, CAL.,JULY 19 Five time 'winner Mike Rooney took the lead at the start of tonight's Scratch Main and was on his way to win number six unt il he went down on Lap Two. Alan Christian moved into t he lead and when J ohn Cunningham and Barclay Trehal tangled on .the third lap, it was Christian soloing the fourth lap for the win. Ron McGill won his first Handicap Main of the season ahead of Norm Denny and George' Carter. As a result of various problems, Sam Vanderhoff, J erry Bowers and Butch Corder watched the finish from the infield. Steve Moore went to the can, (fuel type) poured 10% of the 'goo d stuff" into his AJ.S. powered machine and as "it does make a difference', won the Div. Two Main. Second place went to Greg Rew and third to Carl Cranke. Mike Rooney won his fifth straight 'Dash for Dollars' match race against one of the most spectacular riders in No. Calif. speedway, Paul Orlandi . Paul recently made t he comment, "If I shut off and try the short way around; I get in trouble." P r o mo ter Jim Denny has widened the straightaways at Cal Expo and although a fe w riders had problems with the new 'passing room', it definitely ma de for t he fastes t and closest raci ng to date. _ Nobody but NOBODY borrows Larry Mulock's b ike . NAPA, CAL.,JULY 20 With seven weeks of racing in the record books, I\like Rooney won his third Scratch l\1ain event in fo ur starts here. (His other finish being a second to U.S. Champ Mike Bast on July 13th.) Butch Corder made it two straight at Napa when he won tonight's Handicap Main . Second went to . George Carter and third to Alan Christian . (On four separate nights, Ch ris tian has been a starter in both Main events.] Funny and no t so fu nny - after his collapse in the p its at Sacramento a few weeks ago, Butch Co rder wen t in for a co mplete check up. Dad Lem Co rder tells it like this: "lie had a lot of tests, they X-rayed his head ' and fo und no thing. It m ust of been the hea t." Results in th e Res ults Section. With two laps to go he pulled off with unknown problems into the infield. Bob Baughan (lion) inherited the lead and went on for ' the win. Torm.Scutham finished second after a consistant ride, and Cliff Hylton moved up through the pack to get third after a bad start. Novice 250 Main winner, Jeff Smith , led the first few lap s of the 250 Han dicap eve nt. Joe Gardner took over t he lead from seco nd when Smith cras hed with Jim Hubbard and Novice rider Mike Hall in tow. Then in one of the surprise moves of the season Mike Hall passed Hubbard for second and th en went a fter Gardner. With two laps left Gardner fell and lIall took over the lead . J im Hubbard finished a close second and Dallas Turner got third after a strong ride. Tom Green took the 100 Novice class to lengthen out his lead in the highpoint standings. :'Iissing in the Main \'VaS Green's main competition.
