TTing out in the beanies with the Hi Boots Gary Leake (Ha n) thumps clea r as (left to right ) Er ic McElroy (Kaw). John Garcia [Yam], Morr is Bean IHo n ) and Billy Hicks (Yam) meet an unexpected 250 Novice A class Dehesa track-block. By Rex William Reese HA RBISON CYN., CAL.,JUNE 30 Tim Melancon rode two Yamahas today in the Hi Boots MC D-38 TT -'. Scrambles 2!iO' Amateur/Experts . and Open Combined classes today to prove himself a double threat on the track. In the 250 Amateur/ Expert he only got a second, but in the Open he finessed his way around the track to ge t an undisputed first. The Dehesa track is as unique as it is remote with th e whole set-up sloping up the side of a hill which in turn changes the average 'IT strategy somewhat, namely, if you're set-up for a normal ,track, you'd never make one lap around here, you'd have to change the tuning and gearing around to survive. That is if you can even find the track in the first place. Dehesa is so remote. that even the cops don't even know where it is. And as for myself, I was almost totalled out in trying to find t he p lace, and eventually found it by hlind chance. Daring Dan Fritz (Han) took the 125 Novice A class going away wheelies and al l, over Wayne Ellis (Suz) w ho ca me in a fair second, w ith Tom Volk (Yam) in for third. Gary Leake whi zzed out in fron t of everybody else in the 250 Novice A class on his four stroke Honda, proving that the era of the thumper is not dead. Eric McElroy (Kaw) came in a very distant second with John Garcia (Yam) third. In the 250 Amateur/Expert AI Glover (Ya m ) and Tim Melancon (Yam) diced it ou t against ea ch other, all over the track, in a wild race for first. AI got first with Tim second. Mark Aragon (Yam) hung back for third. Tim came ba ck in the Open Combined to take first, bUI it looked like for a while that he mav have to sertle for another second. Steve Gall (S uz) was put ring pressure on him all the wa y in each moto, hu t the big scare came in t he last one as Kerry Standifer took his Beeze r o ut in front of the bunch and kept it there. Some sort of error between the scoring booth. and the ambulance occurred due to a downed rider, and the race was red flagged for a restart. On the restart, Kerry took his BSA out in front again with Steve and Tim right behind him all the way. On the last lap, Kerry took his Beezer high in the sweeper as T im and Steve went low to get first and second respectively with Kerry third. A bicycle scrambles was held a fte r the races on an abbreviated circuit of the track. For the TT rider the track was a challenge, for the teeny biker it was a real task. Originally the bikes were goi ng to go three motos, but later things became more realistic; down to two as the kids who finished the scrambles should have had an iron lung cont ingency given to the winner. They were gasping with eyes looking like go lf balls, falling d o w n o n each other, crashing something awful; yet they dug every minute of it. Harr y Hai nes (Sch) ro de to a com ma nding first over the Large class. Mike McKenzie (Sch] won the Med iu m s, and Arturo' Payan (Sch) won t he Small. Dc hesa is a fine and challenging track that has prod uced a long line of notable riders including the lat e great Cal Rayborn, and Don Emde, Everybody who is serious into TT should ride it . . . that is if they can find it. • I TRODUCING SuperSprocket'· A major new sprocket breakthrough that outwears both steel and aluminum. _ . -From Jacwal, who brought you the record tion is absorbed into the sprocket it helps smashing Superchain, now comes Superextend both chain and sprocket Iif'e. Everyone wins at Corona's JHA Benefit By Elaine Jones CORONA, CAL.,JUNE 22 The riders came, the spectators came and the celebrities came to make the th ird annual Corona Raceway Juvenile Hall Auxiliary Benefit 'If the biggest and best yet. •• Fonz ie " of TV's "Happy Days," after spending the day with the kids at Juvenile lIall, came out to see his first bike race. lie ended the evening with a seized hand from signing autographs. Ricky Milner ended up the evening with two hig trophies in tow whe n he ran away fro m Chris Smith and Derek Katani c in the Exhibition Half-Mile and then did it again against Gary Davis an d Derek Katanic in t he Open TT. Gary Davis, after pu tting on a stunt show during intermission, topped himself when his bike and his body caught fire during the last event of the evening. Gary, not rea lizing his leg was on , fire, was more concerned with putting his hike out than anything else . Fortunately things got put out before any serious damage was done. The Benefit was truly a co m m un ity project and was not limited to just cycle people. Thanks to all seems very inadequate but because of everyone's generosity every rider that turned out went home with some type of prize and the kids a t Juvenile Hall will continue to have the worthwhile programs provided hy the Auxiliary.
