T he fastes t ride rs com p leted the firs t lap in ju st over th ree hours, an d hadplen ty of tim e fo r the second. bu t th ose wh o lo o ked t o o long had to m oto cro ss th e seco nd lap wh en th e y found ou t th at the t im e lim it hadn 't been extende d. Whaley and S teve Darro w wer e the lead e rs afte r the firs t lap wit h 10 points each , with Don Sw eet right behind at 13. Sad d lebac k winner Lane Leavi tt was all bu t o u t of the chase whe n his d ripping-wet rear t ire fai led to fi nd tracti on on an equally we t off-cam ber log a nd he took a five in section J 9 for a lap total o f 20 points. !\Iark Eggar, winner of the Red . Dog round , was the o nly other pote n tial c hallenger, with 21. But Mar la nd won the motocross, too. adding a fantastic ni ne point lap to his first lap effort, while t he res t of the top five all failed to improve on their first lap rides. Steady Don Sweet posted a 14 to wrap up second place, which, to-gether with his third at Saddlchack and his second at Red Dog, made him the series leader at t he completion of the \Vest Coast swing. Ki rk Ma y fiel d and George Smi th III jum pe d ou t ahead of th e pack in the first lap and used the time they saved to better plan t heir second lap lines and fin ish sixth and sevent h w it h consis te n t rides (27-25 an d 28- 27 res pec tive ly).
