For the big money 360 Expert Main Bob Scal ly and Jim Foley took the front spots at the drop of Hoy Odorn 's flag. As usual, Foley was first into the comer. while the twins were suffering the usual bad starts. Eklund wo und up in fourth behind Chuck Miller (Yam). Scally took over on Lap Two while Fo ley got off the groove, letting Miller and Eklund by. Elbert Turner made his move into fifth . Miller took second on Lap Three and it was all Scally co uld do to hold on . They would swap spots on the track but Turner was having trouble outhandling the A & A Motors Bultaco. It took three laps to get set up so that one big handle full of power would keep the old timer in fourth. In the 125 Junior Main 14-year-old Randy Mamola, despite a possible broken hand, won with ease when Matt Rohr had his motor let go. Gary Caves held second spot with Rod Spencer holding off Jimmy Mertens for thi rd and fo urt h, respectively. Ch ico's Cliff Hylton took the 125 Expert Main, bea ti ng ou t Dan Cas te1hano and Rick Delgado, the D-35 ace number fou r rider. Riding in the 100 Novice class o n his Yamaha he scored an impressive win on Cycl cla nd's one-sixth mile track tonight. Lining up next to him Was To m Green, anot her fast former mini rider . CAL.,JUNE 16 Steve Eklund eased his Borc h framed Yamaha twin into the lead on the seco nd of 10 laps and outpowered a healthy field in the second sem i-pro flat t rack at th e Santa Clara Co unt y fairgrou nds. Action was plentiful for the day with over 450 riders making 42 the scene, down a h undred from the April show, and weather that seemed to increase the number of crashes. Cloudy, windy, almost blustery weather was the bill of fare fo r the day an d the added 15 :'IPH boost the riders got down the back straight made fo r s om e super spectacular getoffs in Tum Three. Hot & heavy heat racing t o ma ke t he program. Ch uck Miller ( 17) d id the rest didn't. Fow ler jumped to the lead and quickly lengthened it over Green in second an d Leroy Crowder in third. A few times he almost lost it as he di d some lank slappers co ming out of the fo urth comer, but nobody was able to catch hi m as he went o n for the w in. Steve Dietz in his new leathers too k the win in the 360 Expert Main. After taking second to De l Si lva in the heat, Die tz took the lead on the start followed closely by Silva and John Grant. Silva looked like he was playing the waiting game. as Dietz either crashes or wins. Del started to make his move on Dietz when the race was hal f over. cutting down Dietz's lead a few feet every lap. b ut pulled off the track with two laps to go, apparently seize d u p . Dan Peterson slid his Ducati into the lead in the first comer of the 250 Expert Main with Jim Hubbard (Yam) an d Bo b Vaughan (Yam) right beh ind him . lIubbard ou t powered th e Duca t i down the st raig ht and to ok over. Th ere was a 200 Ex pert class here for the first ti mc this year as enough Ex pert riders came ou t, Cliff Hyl to n (w ho usually has to ride his I 75 Yamaha in the 250 class) ju mped to the lead wit h Paul Quiring (Bul) in second a nd Bill Snodgrass and a Penton rider fighting for third . lI y lt o n con tinued to lead as Quiring dropped back with Joe Allen coming up to chase Hylton . Hylton wit hs tood the challenge and wen t on fo r the win. •
