Fountain Valley wins at OCIR: Your sister as a trophy girl is like falling off for the photographers Sto ry & photos by Dale Brown IRVINE, CAL., JUNE 6 Fountain Valley High emerged triumphant over six other schools in the continuing Yamaha High School MX Series being held at OCIR. There were only five schools listed on the program. In order to help pay for rider insurance with • five-dollar e ntries, Bell and An aheim wer e invited to co mpe te as guests. As it t ur ne d out, An ah eim was th e o nly sch ool w ith enough riders to effectively challen ge the large Foun tain Valley te am. Yamaha In ternational, w ho along with Vic Wilson, is sponsoring the series, sent a crew o ut to film th e races. They gave jerseys to rid ers in th e 125 junior an d Expert classes (95% of the ri ders wer e H onda-mounted) . As the action got underway on th e short, ~isty track, ride rs started ridi ng over th eir head s to im press the cam era . After a few nasty endos, p hotographers were asked politely to leave the field . By . that .time, I ' had go t te n enough action pi ctures, so I de cided to co nc entrate on the cheerle aders fo r aw hile (do n't try to read an y th ing into th at , Bunky ). • Jackie Gruisson (7 9 Upland HS ) came . f ro m behind to wi n the 125 Beginners Division II race. Here he closes up on Pau l Hernandez (a x Canyon HS ) and Garry Sh ar ron (6 Canvon HS I. T he usuall y smooth ru nn ing OC IR staff ran in t o more tro uble d ur ing the second ro un d of . competition. In the I75·0pen clash , a rider fell and several others ignored the yellow flag . During the ride r's m eeting it had been announced tha t that sort of thing could lead to disq ua lification . A decision to disq ualify t ho se riders b rought some angry pro tests , mostly from parents , who said th at their sons had not seen the yellow flag. Finally it was decided to throw out the second rnoto results and score only the first and third. The best race of the evening was in the 125 Expert division. With a spot on the special race to be held at the Superbowl available for the top riders fro m the originally scheduled schools, (Upland, Aviation, Ca nyon, Mayfair, and Fountain Valley), the action was fierce with Mayfair's Rick Bean co pping firs t Overall . After the races were ove rt the action shifted to the t rophy presentation. The an no uncer had gotten good-looking fem ale-ty pe volunteers fro m each school to act as t ro phy girls. T he foll ow ing scen es ranged from a ti m id peck fro m a minibiker, to several lon g, drawn -out affairs. Some had spent so me ti me watch ing Hateley and Aldana ! Paul Piper , w ho did a lo t of th e w or k in o! ganizing th e An ahe im team effort, rece ived a trophy for bei ng seco nd in his class . Moceri EL T O RO , CA L., JUNE 6 The wea ther was great and the track w as fast. The first race got off o n schedule. T he riders put o n a great show for the crowd of about 200 . In the 2 50 Expert class was the battle of th e n ight, Bob Spicer (Yam ) and Chipper Chapple (Kaw) passed each oth er so m an y times that it was hard to kee p coun t. The las t five laps were wheel to wheel, bar ' to bar. The crowd we nt wild w ith e xcitement! In the end it was Sp icer winning by a w heel. The Ope n class had a tough show to foll ow. It was Bryon Fa rnswo rth (Han) for th e win , bu t not before Kent Wilson (Mai) gave him a race . In the Minibike Novice ciass Dave Sh eets (Kami) came up with the win, b ut ha d to work hard to hold off the fast challenge of Larr y Sumners. In the 100 and 125 Novice class Steve Honeycutt (Han) was battling it out with David Sheets for 10 laps . then Sheets made a great move, p assing on the inside for the win. 36 The 2 50 Novi ces put o n a good sh ow. The start w as go od and we saw Jay Fre eburg (Ya m) and Larry Black shear (Bul) fight it o ut all th e w ay , • with Stan Kemp (Ho n) clo sing fast. Results in the Results Section . Sunday at Carlsbad Raceway he wonboth the 250 and 500 Pro Classes and combined with Marty Smith's 125 Pro win it ad ded up to the overall sweep . The victories didn't come easy . The 500 ended up in a three-way tie for th e Overall win at the end of the day! Mike Yorba (Mai) had won the first round followed by Billy Clements (Hus) and Staten, b ut in t he final Staten came but on top with Yo rba third an d Clemen ts agai n second. The who le scen e co uld have been cha nge d too, had it not bee n fo r a flat fro nt tire on early leader Jim West's Husky. . The n , in the 250s, Sta ten made it look easy with a sweep ove r factory Montesa-rnounted Randy Myers. The en tire Montesa crew was o ut at Carlsbad today, and in th e first mo ta had line d up at the starting ga te in a group so as to make a good start picture wi th all ~Iontesas on t he outside d icing fo r the first tum lead. But, it didn't work that way. When the first tum dust had cleared, five of the clan had crashed into each other and had gone' down. The second m oto found them in te rspersed thro ughout the grid area. Dave Eropkin (Ha n ) again got the hole-shots in the 125 Pros and managed 10 hold off Marty Smith for a while before dropping back. In the first mo ta ?e held the lea~ un til the third lap and In the second It went into the second lap. Once in front there was no h oldi ng back Smi th, however, and he wen t on to win again. Wedn esday, while out riding, Mar ty ba d ly sp rain ed his an kle and couldn' t even walk on it Th urs da y. T hree da ys later he won, saying t hat it didn 't h urt at all. He did hav e an ear -ach e , th o ugh (probably fro m all that accup unct ure). Bruce McDougal made two very strong rides to take seco nd Overall fo r Ho nda be hind Smi t h . In the second mota he moved through the pack with steadi ness and p assed Ti m Lu nde (Ha n) for the ru nn eru p spot wi th three lap s to go. Ascot Earlier in the week, john DeSo to had made his CMC return at Ascot Park and had nearly won the 25 Os. Nearly is the nice way o f saying that while leading the final going in tied withj ef f Jennings (Han). DeSoto's Yamaha lost its ex..p ansion chamber and Joh n had to come to a grinding hault to make q uick repairs. That left the door open for jennings and he scooped up the loot with the Overall victory, his first ever as a CMC Pro. Luke Messer laid claim to the 50 6 Pro win in easy fashion with A lvin Blain registering a second. Current CMC Points leader Mike Bell won his third of the year in taking t he 125 Pros fro m Jason Yodogawa, who won the final on a Yamaha. Irwindale It didn't take long for Arcadia HS to begi n do minating . the cham pio ns hip ro und in the Irw indal e High Sch ool Mo tocross Series. Wh en the star ting ga te fell for the first m o to, they jumped as a uni t into the first five posi tio ns . The y scored an overwe lming 52-14 vic to ry over Azusa H igh . Alan Truax led the Arcad ia charge and picked up the individual Overall tri u rn p h with Hike Fo llmer, his teammate, taki ng secon d. Steve Tafoya topped Az usa's line up with a third Overall. In an effort to win another 250 Pro class, jim West (Hus) came as close as possible only to lose it in a four-rider pileup 30 feet from the checkered flag. When it was ove r Jeff Vidic (Mai) had won the rna to and the Overall and West was tied with him on points fo r second: the best fin ish in the las t moto decid es all ties . West made up for it by taki ng two of the th ree 500 Pro races to Win Ove rall from Luke Messer [Mai}. Dave Ero pkin (Han) won t he 125 Pro race , but only af te r a tough figh t wit h Mike Bell (Han) an d Bill Glo re (Hon) . Bell took seconds in all three rounds w hile Erop kin won th e-final two a fte r a th ird in th e first. Glore had a first an d tw o thi rd s. • Results in the Res ults Section. . Rex Staten rocketed out int o the CMC 250 Pro lead right off the start and stayed there to the Carlsbad fin ish.
