CMCWeek By Alan Shepherd MAY 29-JUNE 2 Marty Smith started June just like he has the previous five months, by winning. Sunday at Saddleback Park, Dan Hanglesben, part owner of DG Performance Specialties of Orange and sponsor of Mark Tyer (Hon), told his rider an additional 00 200 would be thrown in if Mark could beat Marty Smith [Hon] , The added incentive 'm ad e t he first mo to exceedingly interesting and Tyer came thro ugh looking like he just may p ull off the upset . Smith took the lead b ut Tyer was hanging close. , Tyer's Ho nda had t he speed ad vantage and he was in tigh t sec o nd w ai tin g for,th at on e single error o n Mar ty 's p art. It came. In the gull y area, Smith slid out, Tyer shot by lik e a roc ke t an d went on to win th e moto wi th Mar ty charging back fo r a second. Sm ith might ha ve finis hed eve n fur the r back had othe r ho t sh o ts n o t Jim West continued h is w inning ways in CMC motocross, copping the 500 Expert win on his CR400 Husky. ', bro ken . Billy Grossi's factory Honda I came up with ignition problems two laps fro m the end wh ile running third. Ti m Lun de broke. Bruce McDougal crashed. Dave Carlson (Hon) scrambled thro ugh the pack and wound up third with Mike Bell (Hon) fourth . Marty was abnormally quiet before the second moto. Tyer showed signs of determination, too. Word of the 5200 added money spread quickly through the pits. The gate dropped and like a flash, little Dave Eropkin (Hon) moved to the lead. Last Monday he led Smith for four laps before relinquishing the lead and he's been getting faster every week. This time it took Smith only a lap to take over. Tyer, in sixth, slowly wo rked up . to second an d began to close. But the finish came too soon and Mark Tyer almost beat Team Honda rider Marty Smith, tied in points, but lost by mota finishes. o a: UI :r a, UI :r '" z « ..J « Smith won when it really counted, producing a tie on points and taking it Ove rall wi th the fin al mo to win. Jim West (H us) won the 500 race. J im also r od e the 250 but lost all cha nces fo r a wi n when he broke a chain early in the second rnoto. Mike Run yar d (Suz), making hi s firs t sta rt after a bro ke n co llarbone, found t he go ing tough er th an expec te d , being out of sha pe. an d took thi rd Overal l. Two nigh ts earlier at Irwindale in the 500 second m o to West p inched his hand grip and the brake handle when he sideswiped a pole and crashed. Joe J oh nsto n (Mai) picked up the victory over Brent Foes (Yam). Joe put on an incredible jumping show and it all cam e to a crunching peak during King of the Hill when he came off the Bert's Jump and almost flipped it over hackwards. West wo n that event, too, and J o e took second b ut had to take a lon g breather afterwards. He cooled it slightly after that. Eropkin wo n the 125 Pros, b ut not after a q uick examination by the In field Amb ulance a ttenda nts. Seems tha t after the second m oto he was working o n his bike wh en he p assed ou t. Apparently i t wasn't serio us an d he promptly w en t ou t an d wo n th e final wi th Mike Bell , also Honda m oun ted, ta king second Overall. Earlier in the week at Ascot, Bell put on a battle with Mar k Tyer for the 125 win there, but came up on the short end after the Tyer sweep. Joe Johnston made a desperate attempt at that meeting for his-first-ever double win night. and came pretty close, too. He beat Tyer in the 250 in a real showdown of a final m o t o, Countless times Tyer tried to sq uir t by , either ins ide o r outside. but eac h ti me Joe liter ally slammed th e Ossa in front of him an d held him off fo r all five laps . A fantastic d ice with o u t a pass . T he n in the 50 0s, Bob H osford (Ho n) turn ed the tr ick by winni ng th e fin al mo to w ith J oe sec ond and that 's how they finis hed Ove rall . A swap in position s wo uld have reve rsed th e picture. Arcadia wi ll face Azusa this Fr iday nigh t in the Irwind ale High School Ch am pionships. Arcadia demolished Mark Keppel 51-15 in the Se mi Finals Friday nigh t by taking five of the first six positions Overall. The depth of the Arcadia squad should prevail in this week's championship and are this • rep o rter 's eight-point picks to win. 41
