The Overall went to Callaw ay aboard h is Yamaha followed by Miller an d Huffman, both from Corona. Going into the Open d ivision, North had taken over the lead from Rubido ux by a score of 36 to 34. T he final ra ce saw Williams give the Rubidoux fans a thrill, as he grabbed the lead and ran aw ay fro m the North boys. But North knew what they had .to do, and they came t hrough With C allaway taking second and Paul Willi ams th ird . First Annual Grubstake Days High School MX By Rex Reese Y UCC A VALLEY, CAL., MAY 25 The high school MX part o f Grubsta ke Days at Yu cca Valley High Sch ool became officially initiated earl ier in th e d ay during the ir annual parade down the town's main street. In the regular annual parad e the re was a high sch ool MX "float" to advertise the even t. 42 Local MX ace, Mark Miller on a Honda TL 125 p ulle d super long wheelies d own the street . (T hat was it.) The MX was held at Yu cca Vall ey High School where an other event was held about three months ago . Th is time aro un d , the track was great. Besides the "wall of death" uphill-downhill jumps, and the basketball court water hole jump, the track included more tight turns to make up for its general flatness, a small hurdle- ty pe jump, but most of al l, a giant jum p that se nt m an y riders really fly in 1'(. The 125 class got o ff to a fast start as Da vid Urbina (Puc) led t he pack with Mark Miller (Ho n) b reathing down h is neck. Dave's small lead d idn' t last lo ng as Mark was constantly p ush in g h im. Finally, Mark made his move on ~ave, passin g him on a jump. When he h it the j ump, it was incredibl~! As Mark left the j ump, he was flat out 10 four th gear,.and had the bike pitched up almost 10 a right angle to the gro.und. ~verybody who saw it sucked 10 thei r breath, knowing that if Mark ate this one, it would have ki lled him three times o ver. But he survived, everybody resu m ed breathing, and he went o n to win with his wild WFO style. The 250s were even wilder, as abou t • ten guys b las t ed in to the first turn in a real wil d m an 's race. Bob Bolt (Hus) had j us t worked himself in t o the lead wh e n he unlo ad ed af te r th e uphill jum p, (getting run ov er in th e proce ss), putting h im o ut for th e d ay . T he lead w ent to David Urbina (Hon ) who went on t o win the O ver all w ith a 1-2-1 for th e d ay . At th e end o f the day, both the Open and 250 cla sses w er e com bi ned due to the high at t rition rate from the 100 degree he at and many crashes. Up fro n t , it w as war between Urbina (Ha n) and Mike Black (Puc ). In this last moto , Mark Per arovich (Mai ) had his fron t wheel OD on him (he lost half his spokes) as he ca me off a ju mp, putting h im out fo r the day, bu t still main raining third Overall. The High Desert Endos of Yuc<;a Valley, alo ng with the Mothers Athletic Auxiliary, sponsored the event. The Yu cc a Valley Sheriff's Rangers d id a good job of preventing rider-spectator in cidents. Pennzoil donated some a ppreciated oil. M&S Cycles of 29 Palms donated c o n ting ency prizes. Yucca Valley Sporting Goods do nated banners to Sonora wins H.S. By Gertrude Thomas IRVINE , CAL ., MA Y 23 Tonight it was Lowell, Bell, El Modena, Dan a Hills, Sonora and Villa Park High Schools who me t with their best for the Yam aha Interschool series at OCIR. Lowell High had the most entries (32) ~ut it was hard riding Sono ra High th at took the Overall win, with North wins H.S. MX battle eigh t tr ophy winners. El Modena was cl o se behind wi th seven. When the st ar t ing gate dropped for th e 125 Junior Division it was Ch ris Fortier (Ha n ) for Sonora who took the lead and the win . He had some c om pe ti t ion in the second moto in th e fo rm of teammat e Marston Sollender (Ya m ) diving off th e line and lea~ng Fortier to do battle fo r second with Lowell 's Mark Truman . Mark saw an open in g the second la p in the b ack cork-scre w-tur n and dove in only to have Sollender return the favor the next lap in th e sa me corner and grab th e flag for second. In the third mota Fo rtier again took the lead wi th Sollender in hot pursuit, but when the flag came d own it was Fo rt ier o u t fro nt. T he 25 0 and Ope n J uniors we re ru n togeth er . Taking second Overall was Cupp wi th a first, th ird, an d fo ur t h place finishes, and Rubidoux' Ruben D urazo was third. In the 25 0cc Supers, Cupp rode h is Ho nd a to the win in th e opening race o ver Kelly Cal law ay (No rth ) and Mai co -mounted Di ck Miller (Co ro na ). Davis cap tu red the opening he at race over J ohn Cali cc.hio and Ch ris Smith. With half of the field o u t because of noise restrictions . Gary won th e Main eas ily over Don Miener. T he increasingly challenging track too k its toll o.n rid ers and machin ery, b ut when It was all over. the consistency of th e Hemet team paid off. 250 Senior Darrell Brown (Man) was unstoppable as he grabbed the early le.ad for Palm Springs, e ve n a fter a slow th ir d mota start, and held on to it all mo rn ing with nary a flin ch o r a bobble, usu ally better than ten seconds ahead of h is nearest co m pe ti t or. Hem et's Smiley Cai n aboard his G.P. loo kin g Maico, Keith Patten (Ka w) , 250 Junior, was in close pursu it. often ta kin g a quick glance way bac k a t t he pack he had to b ea t.
