CMC week By Alan Shepard Three weeks ago, Jim West was just another rider in the CMC who happened to have won more than his share of overall victories. Then, he caught fire. On May 5th at Saddleback Park, he won both the 250 and 500 Pro classes and has won seven Most Powerful Best Handling MAleC YAMAHA of CORONA West of Mississippi COOPER MOTORS 1101 E. 6th St. - Corona '10 E. His 35 wins during a six-season career still remains 10th on the CMC record list, but just ahead are John DeSoto (39), Bruce McDougal (40) and Jeff Wright (41) . West cracked open both the 250 and 500 class at Irwindale Friday nigh t via clean sweeps. I n the 500 , he had Luke . Messer 's Maico to contend wi th for th e first two rounds, but th en wo n easi ly when his main foe barely held on to the run ne rup spot. In t he 250 , his smaller Husky was obvio us ly weaker compared to the rest of the crowd, bu t three other crashes in t he first moto gave h im th e incentive to wi n the final two roun ds . Do n Bongiorno (Hon) and Larry McCarty (Bul) - th ird and nin th overall respectively - appeared to have the first race in hand when they slammed together and collapsed on t he track. Val Tamietti (Hon) took over, only to slide out a lap la te r. West had moved fro m sixth to fourth and inherited the victory. Tamietti didn't give up, but wound up second overall. West then decided eight m o t e s in 48-hours in his favor by taking both rounds of Sunday's 500cc Pro class. He lost ou t in the 250s on the under-powered smaller mac hi ne against 26 other heavy-d uty Pros. That ranking was won, only after a tough hassle, by Jon Derhammer (Yam). Fri day nigh t 's 125 victor was T im Lunde (Hon), tied overall with Dave Eropkin (Hon) on points. Tim 's final mo to win, his only one of the night, made the difference. On paper, Ascot motocrosses appear like parades, but in reality they are stuffed with g reat d i c e s , come-from-behind rides, and bitter breaks. Mark Tyer, Chuck Bower and Ti m Lunde took their Hondas to the first three spots overall, then duplicated that by dittoing in each moto of the 125s. Ray Lopez (Bull, out of retirement, topped the small 250cc Pro turnout running with the 500s, which was topped by Luke Messer (Mai) with a clean sweep. Highlight of that combined battle came in the final moto wit h a five ride r scramble led much of the way by desert ace Cordis Brooks until his Bultaco quit. Jeff Jennings, on a beautiful-sounding four-stroke Honda, captured second. The expected clash between Duarte and Arcadia Highs in the Fr iday night high school MX was just that ... until the final round when Arcadia, the favorites, rolled up a 42·24 Victory, advancing them into the Semi-finals to face Mark Keppel H .S. win ner of last week's round by default. The winner could m a ke the Superbowl June 22. This Friday night, the other Semi-final clash pits AZlL,a agains t Alh ambra. Resul ts on the Resul ts pages. •
