Chanky had the ad van tage, s tarting on t he 10 ya rd line and putting it t o go od use, staying o u t in fron t of the charge of Mark Ch erf and Mik e Bas t. Steve Bast, playing the good l(UY. gave up his chance 10 be t he ne w King of the Hill of Match Racing. In the first lap of the Fea t ure Match Race, Sonny N u t t e r , the reigni ng Kin g. was d t h roned when he slid OUl and crashed_ _ stopped short of taking the checke red flag and gave Sonn y a chance to restart. The rule about half the field goi ng down d o es not ap ply for a 2 lap Match Race. Steve just wanted his chance to beat Nutter straight up. It was a good race, but Nutter got out in front an d Steve was unable to -regain the lead. Nutter did no t fare as well in the Scratch Main against Mike Bas t. Sonny, Bill Cody, and the other half of the Bas t Win Mach in e, Steve , al l came to th e starting line with just o ne tho ught in m ind, bea tin g M ike . Mike had an id ea o r two as we ll, and jumped t o the lead be fore th e first t urn: He kep t p utting m ore an d more di stance between himsel f an d th e res t o f th e pack, taking th e win hand s down. Mike Bast made it five o u t of five at Bak er sfi eld as Bill Co dy, the o nly othe r rider this season to win a Scratch Main . so far, never let Mike get m o re than a foot away in the four lap event. Uncle Harlan Bast was the hero of the n igh t in the Division Two Main. He won it to the delight of everyone. Even the guys he beat came around to .c o ngra t u la te him. _ Steve fans a first class show. However, the track to some nastylooking spills. Only one rider went to the hospital. Russ Powell was the winner of the Handicap Main after four riders went down on lap three. Rich MacMurray, Norm Denny and Mike Rooney walked away from this one. Ron McGill was taken to the Hospital where X-rays showed no injuries. Second place went to Alan Christian and third to MacMurray. Mike Rooney won his third straigh t Scratch Mai n ahead of John Cunningham and Dale Stetler. Norm Denny was fourth after so me wallbangi ng eli minate d h im .
