He caught a rut and went into a wh eel stand t hat he co uld n ot co ntrol. Rather than hit the wall, he got off, kn ock ing himself out, literally, and knocking himself out of his running win streak. Bill Cody went on to take the checkered flag . Mike Curoso got the second spot, Dan Becker the third, and Bast was fourth. Mike was shaken up but he did go to the pits under his own power. Jeff Sexton came close to making it two Handicap Mains in a row as he diced with Dave Galvin for the lead in that event. Dave came out on top when Mike Bast and l\1ike Konle moved up on Sexton trying for the second spot. He was forced wide and found himself working just to hold the numb er two spot rather than taking o ver the lead . Ventura's own Randy Marsh took honors in the Division Two Main, just inches ah ead of Bob Schwartz and Andy Cado tte, another hom e tow n boy. Bakersfield, Californ ia May 15, 1974 Winn er Number Five, Les Chanky , added his name to the list of win ners in the Han dicap Main at Bakersfield Wednesday night. This is t he fifth week of racing at Kern County, and no one has taken the event twice. Les had one of his best rides of the new year, holding off the challenge of Mike Bast, who is trying hard to be t he second rider of the 74 season to win both Mains in the same nig ht. Bill Cody is the only rider up to this poin t to win both , an d he did th at back at Irwin da le' s ope ning night. The trac k was very wet and there was some talk about calling off the show. After the riders meeting, the word was go. T he word was go, but n o o ne went too fast . There was so m uch traction that it was impossible to get it sideways in the turns , making for a dull show. It was very hard for th e rid ers to get through the turns, let alo ne pass.
