Into the pits it wasJim Fishback with the lead, with T o m Bro oks on his newly acq uired 35 0 Bul running seco nd , (after unloading a t the bomb , remounting, go ing the wr on g way), then pass ing Fishback who had pas sed him when he was knocked senseless after unloading. Fishback battled it out with Brooks and Kevin Hasten, taking the lead , which he held into the pits. This lead was to be short lived , as Fishback broke one of his shocks on the even rougher second time around the course, Doug Winch<:l took advantage of Fishback's, Brooks' and Hasten's bike failures to move in to the lead, The only ride r to challenge Winch<:l's Overall win was Jimmy Brow n on another Bul temporarily . Jimmy got second Ove rall, and second 250. Wayn<: Cook (25 0 Hon) was running at twen tieth Over all through the pits and moved up t o th ird Overall by the finish , on a Novice-covered sec on d loop by the fini sh . Bob Rut ten ( 10 0 Hod) ble w e very o ne 's minds by running ninth Overall th rough th e pi ts, finishing fo urth Overa ll onto loop later, Following Ru tt en was the first Open b ik e, piloted b y K. McK <:an (Hus) . Next to reach t he checkered was newly H u s k y-s po ns o red J im Wotring for fo urth 25 0 Expe rt a t sixth Overall, in creasing his poi n t lead over the other 250s. Former he avyweight king Art Knapp (Hus) was next at seventh Ove r al l , second Open, Not bad, conside ring he was seven tee n th through th e pits! Andy Karker (Ya m) did a little passi ng hi mself on the second loop to move from fi ftee n th Overall to eighth by th e finish, but more important to Andy, (loo king fo r Number Onto in this dass), firs t 17 5 Ex per t, Follow ing in Andy 's tracks was the first Open Am ateur A. May (Hus) , who had picked up severa l first Open Amateur finishes thi s year so fa r, and if he had been an Exp ert he w ould hav e been third. He impro ved his Over all posi tion a whole b unch on the second loop, passing half o f the riders ahead of him . Bob Rom ine (S uz) and Nick Nichols' sp o nso red Dick Harri s w ere next , fo urt h and fifth Op en Exper t.
