JONE:S MO T OS F'ORT BOX 242 NOR T H HO L LVWOOD C AL IF . 9 160 3 CALllDAB1 published in 1971 , is very di fficul t to evaluate. It is intended t o provide beginning trail riders (one suspects Shipman had in mind an average reader o f about 14 .years.old) with all the basic kn owled ge t ha t the y need for trail riding plus a little ex tra . T he book co ve rs so m e el ementary d esign th eory of m otor cy cles, q uite a bit o f th e m ech an ical k no wle dge necessary to ca re fo r the bi ke, a large ch u n k of riding instruction , m o re me chani cs, so rr e em erge ncy p roc edures, and a fin al cha p ter en titled " T he Ban g-Ban g Servo Te c hnique ." The reason th is is a difficult b oo k t o analy ze is b ecause you are fa ced w ith tw o conflicting an d irr econcilable fac ts : F irs t, t he book is beau ti ful in appearance w ith p hotos o n th e back an d fron t cover th at really evo ke th e spirit of tra il ridi n g. an d ins ide th ere is suffi ci ent m a teri al to m ak e any inex p e rienc ed and m any experie n ced rid ers m uch be tter eq ui p ped fo r t he ir spo rt. On the o ther hand, th ere are so m an y irritating. slo ppy. in a cc urate, and j us t p lain missin g ite ms th at m an y read ers w ho b u y th e book mi gh t n o t find th e pat ien ce and tolerance to read it , a nd so me of those who d o mi ght feel che ate d. Shipman begin s th e bo o k, naturally en o ugh , with a preface whi ch he be gin s with the senten ce , '"I never write prefaces ." At t he end of the preface he concludes, "You may possibl y suspect that y ou have just read a preface." Cheap ego shots lik e this a t the expense o f t he re ad er ca n hardly make th e read er predispo sed to lik e th e a u t ho r. Ne xt , yo u a re visu all y assa ulted by the type sty le. In a book th a t sells for $5 , yo u mi ght e xpect th e typ e to be set with j us t ified rig h t -han d margins, but this book comes t ype writ e r style , which is o ka y. I su pp ose as an economy me asure, but wh y in th e wo rld have ra n do m , un e v en pa r a gr aph indentations ? It's m os t disco ncerting, and serves n o purpo se th a t I can see. In th e firs t chap te r, on rake and trail, the au thor d escribes these co nc e p t s in fai rly pic turesque te rms so tha t the read er should co me away with a feeling for wh at th ey m ean. Bu t he has tw o illu strations of o d dball co m bi nati ons of rak e a nd trail, an d none of the normal configuration. Ther e is no d iagram s ho wing how rak e and trail are measured . not e ven a senten ce . telling wh at un it s (degres s and inc hes) ar e n orm ally used to des cribe these quantities. And o f co u rse -th ere is no m enti on of wh at nom imal rake and trail values for different bikes might be. This is o ne of th e very fir st questions th at plagues the beginning dirt rider because he hears more exp ert riders talking a bo u t ra ke and trail and he wonders if his ar e " abo u t right." Th is book won't help him in th at respect. In the chap te r o n suspe ns io n, th ere is th e sa me sort o f pr obl em. Practical informati on , like a sim ple formula for calc ula ting th e sp rin g rat e need ed for a give n bike and rid er wei gh t, is missing. T here is no ex p lana tio n o f how manufactured dam pe rs are rat ed, nor any thing on how to se lec t a damper for
