Lo o kin g a t the bike with its front wheel half off and the seat all the way off, I asked h im wh at happened. "Man , I was reall y co o k ing b ack here af ter the fi f th chec k when I heard th is sou n d fr om th e fr ont wheel. I lo oked down there and it w as hal f o ff th e rim but it did not seem to affec t the bik e th at much so I ju st rode to th e fin ish her e. " Wild man, that Crai g Cain. A few seconds later I was on the way up th e tra il on m y b o rrowed Honda 100 (m an y thanks t o Nei l Gill espie). Fo r th e first five m iles the co urse foll owed a gravel loggin g road until it branched t o the righ t and started a descen t o f abou t o ver 5 0 0 feet fo r th e n ex t 10 miles o r so. Reall y cooking down th e trail I w as passing the slo w er riders a t regula r intervals. About five miles down the tr ail t here w as thi s bi g mud h ole with a lip at the other en d of it. With the shad o ws of th e noon su n playing tri cks with my eyes and m y Carraras I did not notice the mudhole un til it was too la te. T he o n ly way to survive was t o gas it WFO t hrough it and hope fo r the best . .. baaam mm m I hit the lip and ro de the front wh eel for abo ut twenty feet, ala Joh n Ulri ch style at the Lame Puppy En duro. Though ts were flashing through m y mind ; my camera is no t going to be worth anything now and I haven't got any pi ctures yet ei ther; m an , Neil is going to kill m e for bending 'up his bike like this. After I rolled to a stop, I dusted myself off and turned m y attention toward the Honda. Surprised as I was the only thing wrong was a little bend in the handlebars. I returned to the course•. It . was now winding its way upward through the taU pine trees of the area. The course was really hard to follow with many trails allover the place an d not many markers showing where to go. I finally came to the second check, wondering what happened to the first. The explanation offered was because of m y late starting time the checkers had already lef t , and many other people also missed the first ch eck. The guy at check two was cool though, gave me two cards, and showed me the way . The course was no w windi ng through some very good looking moun tain co u ntry. T he course between checks two and three pa ssed o ver some rough r oc ks, but n o th in g t hat bad. I was now ridi ng along the edge of the mountain wi th the trees to m y left and snow covered M t. Lassen t o m y righ t. After so me time out to take some pho t o s I was o n my way agai n winding my way up thro ugh the rocky trail. He re is w here t he trail really got d us ty because of the dunebuggies in front of m e. Seems thei r local club was having an outing in the area. This ca used problems wi th riders getting stuck behind them an d buggies ha vin g to dodge a few when they came roaring around a blind curve. Checkpoint four was located on a fireroad leading directly to check five and then back to the parking lot. This was the best part of the course, just flat hauling on the road to the parking lot, looking out for the occasional four wheeler and trying to stay out of th e ruts. After th e fi ish everybody went n down to the sign up lo cation to have som e food (in cl ud ed in th e entry fee and co nsisti ng o f chili , bread, salad, but no drinks to wash it d own with) and the awa rd ing of prizes, donated by local shops and ranging from tires to spark plugs. ., R ep orter 's Notes : The co u rse was only about thirty miles lo ng, not fo rt y, but st ill f un. The silencer/spark arrester rul e was not enforced at all. I no ticed a rider ride up the road about 300 yards, stop , loosen a few wi res, an d take his spark ar reste r off. In the mo rning the co urse was not very we ll marke d. The cl ub di d a good job for their firs t event an d I hope that they ru n mo re eve nts like t his in th e futu re . Box 1431 WHEI·I DIII_ IT'S YOU Problem drinkers were responsible for 19.000 highway deaths last year. That is your problem. Because they didn't kill only themselves. They killed people they loved. people they'd never met. people like you. And they didn't only kill. They crippled and maimed and destroyed lives without actually taking them. If your friend has a drinking _ problem. there are many ways you can help him. But first you must help him stay alive. So others may live. If vou are really his friend. don't help him drink. Admittedly , you alone probably can't stop a problem drink er from dri nking, But you can discourage it. If he has been drinking. don't let him drive. Drive him yourself. Call a cab .Take his car keys. It won't be easy. After all. he is your friend. Youdon't want to hurt him or insu lt him. But the altern at ive is perhaps losing him.
