; RA.e.E. stars III • .... By Tom Blattler I II CORONA, CAL., A PRIL 13 It was a star-studded 250 Senior division Saturday morning at Corona Raceway, as five former class winners made a showing on the new 1.3 mile MX course. Maico-mounted Brad Lynch was on a hot streak with two consecutive class wins in the past two weeks at Corona, and might have been listed as the favori te going into the competition. However, one of the top 250 riders in the Southland, Ray Topham, also on a Maico, was there to challenge Lynch. Along with the two Maico ri ders , three other class winners of the 1974 season were on hand with the Montesas of Ken Ratzloff and John Barclay and the CZ of Tim Wyant. So far in the early season at Corona, Maico seemed to be the top bike to ride on the new Corona course, as the track demands both power and excellent handling from a contender. In the first six-lap moto for the 250 Seniors, Topham took the early lead and captured the race over Lynch with Ratzloff, Steve Bauer (125 Honda), and Barclay following. Bauer was a bit of a surprise, as he had signed in the 125 Senior class, but because of not enough riders, he had to move in to the 25 Os. Moto number two once again found the Maico of Ray Topham out in front, as Ray was really after the first place money. Lynch again ran second and Ratzlaff third with Tim Slarian and Wyant rounding out the top five positions. After the first two moto, T op ham only needs a t hi rd place finish in the fmal moto to guarantee the overall class win. For Lynch, the fmal moto was a must to have any shot at overtaking Topham in the overall points. In the third and final go-around, Lynch took his Maico to the win, but Topham was right behind to take second and the overall class honors. Ken Ratzloff grabbed his third straight third lace to finish number three overall, followed by Bauer, who did a good job ith his 125 Elsinore , and Barclay on the Montesa, The closest race of the 1974 season t Corona came in t he 125 Juniors, as ree riders all tied in overall points. In e first moto, Honda-mounted Vic carborough picked up the win and 400 oints towards his overall point total, ith Jackson Kistler getting 300 points or second followed by Jim Ball (2 25 ) d Larry Ripley (169). The second moto saw Kistler taking e win and 400 points wi th Ripley econd (300) and third going to Ball 225) and fourth to Scarborough (169) . Entering the final ra ce, the poin t otals lo oked like this: Kistler- 70 0 , carborough-569, Ripley-469 , and all-450. Kistler needed a second place mish in the last moto to take the win .th Scarborough and Ripley having to in to have a chance at the top glory. And then the final moto saw the early impossible happen, as Ripley ook the win followed by Scarborough, on Smith, and Kistler. In totaling up he overall points, Ripley finished with 69 points as did S..:;::-borough and istler , However, Ripley took the verall win wi th his win in the final oto with Scarborough second overall d Kistler third. A very exciting and ery competitive 125 Junior class, and e of the closest finishes in R.A.C.E. otocross history. • t Accordinq to our lat est survey , mor e A than 6O"> of all Cycle/News dealers sell every copy on t heir count ers.
