In the 125 class, specially prepared Hond a C R-125M two-strokes dominated the Hangtown track . When the d ust cleared , Honda ride rs line d up like this: Marty Smith was the overall winner; C huc k Bower, 112; Mickey Boone, #4; Bruce McDoug al, 117. Not a bad way to start the d ay and the AMA National Motocross seaso n. 1st 250cc. The good things co ntinued to happen in the 250 class . Last year 's II I bike, the Elsinore CR-250 M, en ded up in its usual position - first overall. The rider, however, was a newcomer to the Honda Team - Bill Grossi. Rich Eierstedt, last year 's Trans AMA 250 winner, took the 114 spot. And Gaylon Mosier, . •ano ther new Honda Team member, ca me in fifth. So close 500cc. With the results of the first 500 Mote , it looked like Honda was headed for a clea n sweep : "Rocket" Rex Staten led from start to finish aboard the only Elsinore in the race -a factory' RC-400 . Early in the second Moto, Staten running fifth ran into a three-bi ke pile-up, yet still manag ed to finish thirteent h. All in all, it wasn't a bad beginning to the National AMA for the Hond a Team-two wins and a promise of be tter things to come. Always wear a helmet and eye prutectron when you ride.
