It was a trials ride r's loo p all t he way with a tigh t five hou r limit and an hour's gra ce at a .poi nt a mi n ute. From the go rge , whe re Se cti ons One thro ugh Four strung along the r ocky creek bed, the loop took off almost st rai ght up (Sec t io n Five, which every o ne had to rid e) and went into a lon g 1,200 foot climb where it clung to the ridges and mountain faces. The return t o th e gorge lay through Trials Rider Can yon , a picturesque tree-fill ed hollow th at ha s to be ridden to be ap p reci a te d. Marland Whaley and Bernie Schrei ber rode nearly head-to-he ad the whole day, fin ishing the first loop virtually t ied: Whaley 16, Schreiber 17. It is very much a two-man ra ce in the A.T.A. Expert points competition . Late in the second loop, Bernie ca me through Section 19, a very difficult lo ose-surface climb, turn, and st eep co rksc re w d eseen t over rocks - and cl eaned it. Mar land showed up minute s later, feel ing very much the pressure of ti me. He put head down, charged t he slope, bobbled just o nce, and the front wheel fell off the slope to the dow nside. Marland stood on t he spot, threw up his hands, acknowledging the Five, and said, "There it wen t. " As it turned o ut , Whal ey had no t blown it. In Trap 20 , both he and Schreiber fived it, and they turned in their tickets with one point between the m ; Schreiber 29, Whaley 30. Then th e nap really st arted, for it was discovered that an inexperienced checker had punched Bernie's ticket with a th ree when he had fived a section. It took some legwork to dig up t h ree riders who had witnessed the mistake. When th e score was co rr ec ted , Marland bad won it - by one point. In the Amateur class, there was a dead tie for fourth, a statistical rarity in a trial of th is length. Harold Rich and Randy Rader checked in wi th final scores of 73 - ten deans, five o nes, five twos, and nine threes - a dead heat. Si nce it was not a trophy position, rather than hold a ride-o ff, the organizers awarded both men fourth p lace pain ts. T hen Novices Val Schmidt and Matt Parsons walked in fro m the seco nd loo p with identical score car d s to t ie fo r firs t in class at 61 points total. Counting cleans, Schmid t wo n the tie -b rea ker ,seven cleans to six . Val , a fo rme r m o t ocr osser rid in g h is second po ints trial o n a new Cota, had actua lly won it o n the first loop. He-and Parsons b o th cleaned 7, 13, and 17 ; the n Schmi dt cle aned 19 and that wo n it, since both men rode a near-identical second loop. And Joe Ige, with his hom e-brewed 152cc Saracen, picked up transfer points afte r several tries. In fact , Joe led the Novi ce s through the first loop with a 26, but a 37 point second loop dropped him to third. t .
