Argyll MX By Reese Ultz DIXON, CA L. , MARCH 10 Clear ski es, a semi-d ry track, and stiff competition team ed up to make a truly fine day for motocross at Argyll M.C. Park, t oday. The track here has been rained o ut for m ost o f th e winter, bu t it now appea rs that normal racing will be on tap for the rest o f this y ear. T od a y had to be something sp ecial with the line-up for 'hot-shoes' that answered th e starts. In the 125 Expert class , alone, such Northern California notables as Kevin Henry, Charlie Marshall, Don Dav is, Bill Carnes, James Watson, and Dennis Pye att found themsel ves doing battle for three twent y-m inute m otos . Ch arl ie Marshall, last ye ar's Blue Plate No. I, ca m e out the vic t o r but not without a hard-fought struggle from t he en ti re field o f rid ers. 25 0 E xpert honors went t o Eric Watson o f South Lake T ah o e, but not wi thout a sec saw figh t fro m Danny Mancino o f Ch icago Par k. In the Open Expert dic e , Ch arlie V ollenw eider o f Lagunitas truly outclassed the field. but runner-up J im Santone also turned in three fin e performances. As in the past , Argyll M.C. T ed eventually got the lea d o nly to rel inquish it when he fell while Mills and Fo rd had a d uel and Scroggin s got right b y the two dueler s. He backed up the win with a third in the 125 Main behind Ted Davidson and Alex Jorgen s e n. Ken Bentley won h is round of th e 125 Novice Main s an d is very close to the Junior tu rning po int. The two Mains show j ust h ow bi g th is clas s is bec om ing and the same is holding t ru e for the 250 and so the sport is truly growing. , Butch David son , t he form er Num be r One Black Plate won the Open Ex pe r t on a new 360 Bultaco. The win was very impressive and Davidson seems to be b ac k in good shape. Mike Eisenhut won the 80cc Novice Main , beating out newcomer Larry Winfield and David Cave . It wo n' t be too much lo nge r and Eisen h ut will have to move up a class and the tal en ted Winfield m ay have a class o f his own. The minib ike class is growing in th e 8 0 class and holding it s ow n in th e 60, but is su ffe rin g in the 100 or Open because of a ru le in th e Dis tri c t requiring only st oc k frames to be run .
