SAMMX flo» II IiIlI • By Tom Corley ORANGE, CAL., MARCH 16 After two weeks of havin ' a swampy track and cancelled races the Saturday Saddleback Association of Motorcyclists' program wicked up again at Saddleback Park. Thick fog engulfed the track. So did the combined 25 0 and 500 class ' crossers who were the first guys t o bash it o ut in th e new two-40 minut e m oto sy ste m! Being the first associati o n to try th is ou t , ev er yone i n cl u d i n g th e Mini ·'Crosser s will be m otocrossln ' as long as th e European s. This will hopefully help develop the Expert superstars to have the demanding sta mina needed in the Trans-AMA circuit. There were three long races run tw ice during th e day, 250-500s and Old Ti mers toget her, a co mbined 125 scre ame r and a long bou t for all the 100 and Mini nip pers. Speakin ' of streakin ' , (it has hap pe ned at school campuses, rad io stations, Ho llywood Boulevard , Takahashi Yamaha's gra nd opening, etc.) and today th e racer s a nd ch icks were com pletely wigged o u t when they saw the first st reake rs at Sa d Park. A co uple of dudes with full c overage hel mets bipped o n by and let it all ha ng o ut on Honda X R-75s! With so m any classes being meshed togeth er, things were hairy an d it was co nfusing to try and figu re out how someone was doin in his class. One reality was that Mike .Yo rba (Mai) pulled a fast one on the 500 Expert competitor Cole Hastings. Yorba high -tailed for first place both m o tos an d took the overall over Hasting's Hast evarna . T yer sta r ted a first place rally in the first moto of the 250 Experts on h is super-rapid red-tanked Penton and streaked out ah ead of the co m bined Intermani ac-Expert crew. Full throttling it fro m behind charged t he q uic k Su zooks of Mike Steams and Mike McGowen. Not sin ce the Trans-AlvlA races can I recall the Su zuki big-bore m ach ines ' d oing so we ll as S teams and McGowen flying in the second 250 Ex pe rt m o to . Then Mark Tyer ace d McGowen WFO. Clay Musolf (CZ) finished fo urt h this final moto, draggin' alo ng ya rds o f course flags aro und his m ach in e. Nobody laughed at Richee Collins, 'cause he wicked it into second in the 10 0 Intermediate first moto behind fast J eff Ward while J unior Mike Johnson was third.
