With A mor' s finally sorted ou t an d so me luck, he will co n tin ue to sh ow them the w ay aro und th e track. . The track condition held up well, in fact in a lot o f cas es , to o well. The surface stayed very hard and slic k causin g many rid ers to chec k out th e tra ck at a close ran ge as they could not find the traction . With the season fas t drawing to a close and only eigh t riders go ing in to the Championship race on April 27, t he riders are t ryi ng to ac cu mu la te as man y • poi n ts as possib le. Spencer SAN F RAN CISCO, CA L., MA R. 2 It too k a lo t o f t ime, sweat, and money, but it was wort h it to have sportsma n racing in the Cow Palace. That's the attitude of the organizers o f this race, whic h d rew 49 4 sportsman rid ers o f Distri c t 36 . With nearl y 3000 spectators a nd asso rted pit people it was a long a n d in terestin g show . T he hott e st b attl e f or th e night w as in the 25 0 Ex pe r t even ts. The battle fo r p oints w as st ill open even though Steve Eklund was leading. • With 36 rid ers in th e class, anyt h ing cou ld happen. Eklu nd had an eigh t poirit advan tage over sec o nd place man L3rry Drew. Drew elected n o t to ride or defen d his number o ne plat e a t this event, so th e riders to con te n d with w ere Kelly Mcisaac, Kirk King , Chuc k Miller and Gr eg Ferguso n. Mcisaa c ha d 21 poin ts go ing in whil e th e other th ree all had 19. A sizeab le m argin for Eklund, but not b ig enough. In the firs t o f three hea ts Mci saa c grabbed the lead on the second lap when Nick Naz zisi dropped his Bultaco. Finishing second was Greg Ferguson (Tri) with Rangy Gibbs making the last . direct transfer sp o t. Bru ce Brown too k the seco nd hea t after grab bing t he lead fro m Mik e Faria on the fo urth lap of a restart. Faria held o nto second o ver Mike Ka lamar as with Duane Yarro w, Terry Gra ham and Byr o n Robe ck off to the Semi. Bo b Stuscavage led the final heat wire to wire with Chuck Miller blasting his way th rough the p ack for sec o nd over Wad e Boyd. Ricky Graham took Pa t Rose an d J oey Klein to th e Sem i with h im a nd set th e sta ge for what co uld be an up set as Eklun d was elim ina ted in t he seco nd hea t w he n he ran in to the back of John Gu glielm e tti. The w in in the Main would b e worth 16 po in ts an d that w as eno ug h for anyone of t he three to take th e overall win. The Se m i was pretty anti-climatic w ith all the close guys making it d ire ctl y to th e Main . Randy Gibbs to o k the decided w in over Duane Yarrow. one 0 f th e few ride rs a ro und capable of racin g b oth short track an d mo to cross an d making it on the top 20 list s of both . Third and fina l transfer went to Andy Whit aker ; he was the last man to make th e Semi. He p assed Mike Kunsman o n th e last lap to make it to the main, and th e new Expert is on h is way. T he 250 Expert Main was bill ed as a 15 lap per as th e nigh t wore on. On th e pole w as Mci saa c w ith Ferguson and Miller sharing the fron t row . At t he start it w as Ferguson an d his Triumph to the lead w it h Mike Fari a and Mci saa c follow ing. Bruce Brown go t o ff real hard and the race was called a t 12 lap s wit h Ferguson w inning handily ove r Mike Kalamaras (w ho w ork ed up fro m sixth ) wit h Faria still holdin g off Mclssac. Gib bs be at o ut Yarrow an d Stuscavage outlasted Mik e Miller for t he other tro phy. In th e point co u nt, Ferguson won th e ov erall high point fo r t hat class with 3 7 p o in ts w hile Mci saac m oved ah ead of Eklu nd by one point. T he 25 0 Novice affair started off close but d idn't stay t hat way. Bob Gomez and Fran k Borb a wer e tie d co ming in to t he nig ht's last mee t wi th 27 poin ts eac h . Both made hea t race errors an d had to ride t he Semi. T ha t is wha t mad e the d iff erence. Bo rb a wo n th e event wh ile Gomez missed th e tra ns fer sp o t by o ne pl ace. T his set the stage for Borba and he didn ' t even have to t rophy to w in t he overall. He had gained more first pl aces than Gomez an d w as in lin e for t he b ig win no m atter wh at, b ut he still took a fo urt h in th e Main to take th e win b y four points. Another close b attle was in th e 125 • Novice w ith Jim Mertens only two poin ts in th e lead . While he didn 't im prove o n his sco re, neith er d id an ybody els e and he won that trophy . Lonnie Ker ly added insult to injury by winning his Main eve nt to ta ke the 125 Junior Main and Overall with a 14 point ad van tage. Only J erry Kol e had a bigger o ne than th at, Ed Heen ey m ad e a valian t co me ba ck in t he 360 Novice class to no t only win the Main b ut also to co me up wi th a three p oint m argin ov er Dave Goodwin. T he last even t of t he d ay w as t he 360 Expert and it w as a thriller. Den ni s Ro b inso n w o n his b iggest win eve r. His hard lu ck has evidently changed : he is back o n t he rig ht streak. (What? They're rid ing nake d ? . . Ed.], Roy Taboad a took t he secon d a fte r a duel w ith Mike • Ken yon and Ro n Sarv er.
