Cycle News North Idaho Observed Trials By Abbey Carpen ter - BOISE , ID AHO , MAR . 3 T he weath er man was good to the hard y souls t hat turn ed out for th e winter trials put on b y th e Boise Trials Club. Some o f th e be st r iders in so uthern Idaho were o n hand to rid e the challenging sec t io ns laid o ut by Quint Grego ry. Sectio n 10 proved to be Cj) the m ost exciting fo r the Amateurs and Expe rts and a real cro wd pleaser, T he sec tio n dropped off a bank in to the sand al on g a cree k , ra n down the rock y stream , turned aro und sharply and went ba ck up st rea m, ove r roc k led ges and discard ed hunks o f ceme n t , with a sharp left t u rn up a sandy bank - t o th e exit. Sec tio n II was almost to o challenging, becau se on ly fo ur rid er s mad e it over the large ce ment slab under bush y trees. The riders h ad to make a sh arp left hand turn in d eep sand w ith no ch an ce for tracti o n before th e fron t wh eel had t o be "lo fted o ver th e 2 foot slab. Dan ny Leet knew how to control his hand just pe rfect as he picked up the win in the 250 Ex pert class. Lee t , ridi ng for Ol ym pic Cycles in San Rafael had to put up with Mike Amaral in alm ost all three 20 m in u te motos. Amaral rid ing a YZ took advantage of a hole left o pen by Leet in t he las t mota and went o n to take the win , b u t because of Leer's better score in th e previo us rno t os Amaral had to settle for second overall. Rich Sch illing broug ht h is CZ in for thi rd o verall. Leet looked like a sure winner in t he 5 00 Expert class as he wa lke d away from a ll o thers in the first mo to of th at class. As far as the other races went, I' ve never · see n so many peop le crash and break bikes as I have to day. T he race started at II :0 0 a.m ., with a great ru n to the smo ke bomb, a new experience for this area, Dale Demaris, on his 360 Ya maha (Not exactly th e average run of the mill Yam ah a) too k a n early lead. He probab ly would have kep t it thro ugh th e entire race if he would n 't have t h o ugh t he was off the course j ust after th e smoke bomb an d turned arou nd . (He missed th e riders meetin g!!) Dale regained the lead la ter in the first ' lap and kept a co mfortable lead a ll through the race, fin ishi ng 3~ minutes ahead of Brad Lec klid er o n h is Can-Am (What's t hat???) Dale Demaris fin ishing first is reall y no big su rp rise as he' s always fast. He says he has a bike now t ha t, quote " will not brea k" unquote. But a fter therace, in co nfidence, he sh owed me his crac ked sw ing a rm t hat would not have made ano the r lap . Brad Lecklider had a su pe r rid e and passed Kieth Nerseth with abo ut ten miles to go . Kieth admitted a fte r th e race he h asn ' t been training hard eno ugh. he finis he d th ird abo ut 30 seco nds be h ind Brad.
