Harry K1inzman (Yam) w on the 35 0 GP race, then la ter in th e program went away fro m th e 250 GP start charging for th e lead. Coming b ack from T ur n Nine, it w as Steve Lang with a clea r lead ov er Wally Karpy nec and Mike Ilaeder. Harry showe d up nearl y a half-mi nute later, making a disgu st ed ges tu re as he passed th e pits, but o therwise running strongly. (Overshot Nin e?) H e se ttled down to th e grinding task ah ead, and began t o methodically p ick o ff riders finishing fourth overall and third Junior . The 250 Production ra ce was not quite to be a Yamaha benefit . Though Ri chard Barron on an immaculate RD-250 ran away w ith th e win, Wally Karpynec and Ken Gill , both o n Su zu kis , backstopped him at sec o nd and third while drafting ea ch other in a race-lo ng battle of nerves. Karpynec asserted hi mself near mi d-race, then held Gil l o ff for the d ura tio n. The slick spots claimed a coup le of would-be contender s, when they got off the clean "fast" line and w ent off into th e mud. Gerhardt Cle m, firs t time o ut on a ju st-b ou gh t Kaw asa ki 35 0 GP single, got off a t T urn On e, wh ich had so me especially treachero us spots. Lee Flem ing slid h is 900 Kawasaki off T urn Nine in to the mud with su rprisingly little damage while charg ing Parrio t and Gerki in the Op en Produ ction race. T akin g one small bl essing fro m all the rain , m ay b e it w ill spark the growth o f some gro und co ver vege tation a t OCIR, and put an end t o so me of th e mud fla ts (and ac co mpanying d rainage problem ). Even after all the sweeping, it was still a bit slippery notab ly in turns One, Tw o, and Nine. Weather fo r the race itself was near p erfect, clea r and cool, as a so mew ha t thin fie ld go t down to pra c tici ng. (T h is was 'a rai n-out date from March 3, wh ich undoubtedly co n flict ed with many rid ers ' Day tona pla ns.) T he doings in Florida continued to preo ccupy folks in the paddock, at least until Ago got it sq uared a way. He di dn't win anything, but t h is Rickman-Tri um ph su re made pretty no ises, It was stree t lega l, but he entered the GP class. (???) himself a blast , slipping and slid ing the big (and very forgiving) Honda around the spooky sp o ts and grinning at the photographers. After a frantic re-star t, Talbot got dow n with it , clambering a ll over the big BMW in the slow tu rns, picking o ff one by o ne th e places he had lost. He caugh t Mik e Parriot (Yoshim u ra Honda ) in t he seventh lap, got Mar k Hay es (Ho n) in the ninth, and fini she d seco nd overall.
