How many ti mes do yo u see a Dalesman 125 in the desert? Ponderosa hare scrambles By Dale Brown LANCASTER, CAL., MARCH 3 Rain turns most Southern California tracks into quagmires. Rain turns the normally dusty desert into a place filled with traction. And so it was for the Ponderosa Hare Scramb les. But yo u can't use .all that tractio n when you're flying through the air between w hoop-de-doos, and the Ponderosa is loaded with whoop-de -does. The sun was shining and the wind was like ice as the race got underway. Eight miles tater, as they passed the scorer's stand, Larry Roesler (CZ} was in the lead. Bob Masse y, also on a CZ , caugh t and passed Roesler on the second loop and held onto first through the third lap to the finis h. Roesler got second Overall and second Open. John Kap lan (Hus) nabb ed third Open. In t he 175 d ivisio n, Mik e Merrick (Ho n) was the victor, w ith Chris Mullet (DKW) an d Paul Ziegler (Ya m) finishing second and third, respectively. Gary Wingate brought his Yamaha across the finish line ahead of all other T r a ilb ik e s ,' Kevin Randall (Yam) finished second and Joe Swindell (H.D) got third. The previous day was reserved for the O ld-Ti mers to show the youngsters how it was done. J ohn Kaplan (Hus) set a good example; he won.
