Ern ie Townsend , aboard a Hond a as was T ip to n , took second overall with fi nis h es of second, th ird, and seco nd in the three motos. Ka wasa ki-m o un ted Chris Marks ro de to th ird ove rall. The 125cc Junior d ivisio n proved to be a con te st b e tw ee n Bill Noble (Pe n ), and Jim Wrigh t (Yam ). Wright took the firs t m ota over No ble and Su zukimounted Ke n Doe ge, while Noble came back in the second m o ta to take t he top spot over Wrigh t and Doege. The third a nd final m o ta was to be the tic breaker. Wright took a co m m an d ing early lead in th e race and lo oked lik e a su re winner. but on the last lap he c ras hed into a fa lle n rider an d Noble came across as the winner of the third m ota and th e class title. Wrigh t fi ish ed second a nd d isappoin ted wi th n Doege taking th ird ove ra ll. In th e 125 cc Seniors, Mark T yer rode h is Penton to t he win in the first two m o tos an d held on to win th e overall div ision honors with a fourth p lac e fini sh in th e fin al mota . Dave Williams, also o n a Pen t on, took second overall with two secon ds a nd a third , while Husqvarna-mounted Bob Haag was th ird . T hi s trac k has quite a h ist o ry about it. A lo t of BIG (an d I m ea n BIG) names hav e made their start her e, o ne w ay or a nother. Dave Aldana, Gary Scott, Skip Van Leeu wen , a nd Dick Man n have passed th rough here . After practice, the race day began wi th a salute to T he Flag a nd the National Ant he m , adding a rather folksy a nd classy touch to the whole se t up. Nsat. Wo w. During th is rath er pleasant day , I saw a w hol e lo t of good and bad things aro und me. The good things were tha t everybody was really friendly an d willi ng to help ou t a gu y who has never seen a Tf o r Short Track before in hi s entire unnatural life.••1 was astounded a t all the po wer th at the average TT bike p u ts out, and the way all the guys just slide a nd bu zz ' ro un d a nd 'rou nd an d 'round . Fast! Almost everybo dy on the tra ck was in credibly fast . T hese guys really have the guts. to stuff it into a turn on a 200 lb. bike with a 40 H P en gine and no brakes to stop (or one brake, at least ). Arrgh, The re was so me flashy ta len t o ut th ere. Re x Hail ey , a n O pe n class Expe rt at the te nder age of 16, just bl e w eve ryo ne away on the track. This kid is c ham pio n sh ip m ate rial, fo r su re. Wat ch for him if you' re a fan of hi s. Watch o u t fo r h im if yo u're o n t he same tra ck with him. He rides a Yamm ie 25 0 tw in that is reall y a sc reami ng piece o f d ynamite. Don Frauenberger also rides a Yammie tw in, and he's grea t. He's also m ad e out o f rubber, to o . In the second m ota o f t he 175·2 50 Nov/Am /Ex Shor t T rac k, Don did a spec tacu la r little numbe r into a wall of tire s th at lin ed o ne en d o f t he track . His bike flopped ar o u nd on him a co u ple of times, an d bust ed o ff its shift lever. This d idn 't faz e him o ne b it, as he wen t b ac k to th e pits, got a n ew lever, and w ent bac k to th e last ST m o ta to ta ke second. Another go od rider co me s from t he 10 0 ra nks : Stan Kins ey. T his young man is sponsored b y Mar k Cortu m. Marks says a bout Stan : " A scot, watch ou t! " Ye t another fine rider (again helped by Cortum) is Scott A nde rson . He is th e No . 2 Novice rid er at th e trac k, an d o nly s tarte d riding in October! Unfortu n ately for Scott, t oday he fe ll in o ne m o t a of the TT and had h is head ce n rerp u nc hed by a nothe r rider . He had to be hauled o ff to the h ospi tal, a nd hi s condi t ion is un known as of th is wri t ing.
