"] I 714-543-9914 14 By John Beth ea Photos by Buzz Cycle News is your voice - use it It was a 31 rider field and to pping it was last week's last place finisher, Gaylo n Mosier (Hon). He looked d ecep tively fast as he took on the always tough Rex Staten (Mai) an d it resulted in a p lace -swapp ing affair both rounds. From start to finish in round one Gaylon led, but Rex was so close that any hin t of an er ror would have reve rsed matters. In the second, ho wever , Rapid Rex got the shot from the ' gate and main tai ne d the lead fo r several laps. Then, something rather rare... Gaylon passed Rex! He hel d it, too, edging out Staten by abo ut 50 yards whe n the event was finally flagged off the course. Wedged in third was lit tle Morris Malone (Yam) havin g earned that spot with a third and fourth in his pair of motos. Mark Ande rso n on a new Husky took fourth from Gary Chaplin (H on ) and Jim Wilson (CZ). It was the first time in a lo ng, long time that Wilson collected any CMC cash. The 500 class was completely the opposite as Staten p ropelled his way to the overall win for the second week in a row, and fo r the second time he aced out a factory Husky rider to d o it. Last week taking two seconds was Jim West and this week Billy Clements ale the Maieo 's dust. Mike Yorba (Mai) led early in th e se cond heat but crashed when he hit a neutral heading into a tum and slid ba ck to third. In the first round he had a bad st art and worked slowly through the pa ck to fourth . Also finishing with a third and fourth wa s Luke Messer (Mai). but his lower position in the final round compared to Yorba se ttled that tie. Over in the 125 Pro class, Marty Smith is etching his nam e in the CMC record books as he won his fourth day even t in a row (eight for eigh t in m otos). You hav e to go all t he way b ack to 1971 to find the la st tim e any o ne did that. And, th e CI\IC sta ndard is five whi ch mean s this Sunday a t Carlsb ad he cou ld tie it. Th e record is held join tly by Jim Beauchamp an d Billy Urba n . Fo r the secon d week in a row, Honda teammate Chuck Bow er found himse lf st uffed in second in b o th mot os to ta ke a so lid runnerup sp o t in th e pay line . Rob ert Elliott (Mo n }, wh o looked fast last wee k before experiencing his troubles, made it stay together lo day and worked out fo r a good third placing over Bob Brooks (Pen ). Saddleback is cracking down on the silencers. If th ey mis s you at the gate, expect to be caught on ce inside if you are running without o ne. About a dozen , fellows with phony silencers were kindly ejected from the park (several w ere CMC ra cers) be cause of their failure to heed the rul e . Complaints have been co m ing in from not only the home tract a mile away , but also from the more friendly fire station across the street. • Results 100 Jr : 1. Mkila Mlt ich ( Yam) . 2 . The pros returned to Irwind ale Raceway for their season open er ton ight and no holds were barred in their battle for the bucks. Ri ght away Chuck Bower (Hon) and Dave Pessy (Han) picked up where they left off last Nove mber - out there at the fro nt of the 125 pack. From start to near fmish of th e first moto Bower led, but then Pessy pulled a tricky move from under his sleeve and passed Bow er on the outside setting up for the Steve Hurd j um p just a few turns fro m the end. That pumped new life into th e large Irwindale cro wd . Bower came back and held on the second time while Pessy had his woes finis hing fourth behind Ch uck Lunde (Ho n) and Dave Taylo r (Yam), w ho gets some great starts but can't see m to hold it against the m ost experienced an d older pro s. Give Taylor time and he should be one of Irw indale's best. In the final show, Pessy again pulled it ou t with Bower se ttling b ack in second secure in the knowledge he did no t have 10 p ass Pessy to win it o verall. Lik ew ise, Pessy neede d th e first to secure second p lace m on ey fro m Lunde, wh o also had two thirds to his sec o nd m o to seco nd . T he 250 trio of races were a little less spectacular in that Jeff Vidic (Mai), retu rn ing from his b ad sp ill so me m onths ago at Saddleback in which he smothered a vertebra, swept the class, (desp ite his neck brace), just like he used to d o when he was all in one p iece last year. Pessy again was a disappoin ted second overall as he scored well with a 2-3 -2 performance. Third went to Rex Staten, whose 250 Maico is still ex periencing problems, Not so in the 500s, though. Rex whipped out Iwo victories and a second to overcome old rival Jim West by but one point as Jim won one and took two seconds. It was a race to the end in the final. But, as it always seems, the checkered ca me to o soon for anything rea lly "trick" to be carried out by the lan ky West . • Results PO WOER PUFF , 1. Suo FiSh (HOd I. 2 .
