AMEGP By Jack Co llin HIGH PERFORMAIVCE LUBRICAIVTS AIVD ADDITIVES MOORPARK, CAL., FEB. 3 $1,000 in prizes, and 40% trophies to sportsmen had AME members tum up in bunches to race at Valley Cycle Park this Sunday, despite over zealous advertising by another outfit at Valley's entrance. It was Grand Prix time on the extended course , featuring LeMans starts and 45 minutes motos for all classes. Endurance was the name of the game and to add in centive, the leader of each lap got $5 . Bill Payne showed us all that he 's played this game before, as he brought his Cooper in first in the 2 50 event and had opened a great lead in the big -bore race until his carb ra ttled loose at the twe lfth lap, forcing him to do a little in-race maintenance: to finish. Pay ne too k th e lead on the second lap and he ld on for eleven more, adding $60 in lap money to t he $150 first place finish . Jim West (Hus) and Ed Cole (Pen) ro de a hard ra ce but couldn 't catch Payne. The big-bore Seniors had to watch Payne in the lead from the s tar t. West was entered in this race also, along with 17 other big-bore strokers of the Junior and Intermediate . classes. Mike Todd (Mai) was the biggest threat to Payne's lead, followed closely by Randy Berkeley (Mai). West just didn't look righ t. Anew, over-in fla ted tire washed out all traction and c on tr o l, and eventually the slipping skin caused him to run out of gas in the last lap. Over the top at AME GP. The 125 Seniors fiel de d an eager bunch at the line, to go fo r the biggest share of the p urse . Jeff Wright got a good start and held the lead for five laps until Greg Robertson got his Ri ckman by him. Three laps later Robertson bro ke down and Wrigh t got his lead back. Wrigh t could keep the lead just one lap th is time because Mark Tyer (Pen ) passed him by. While the lead was being bandied about like that, no one but the crowd seem to see Jim Hale pamper his Penton in place. Hale, who started in eighth, had moved steadily toward the fro n t until the second to last lap he got by Tyer and then Wright, and held on to win it going away. • Results M INIS: 1.
