Near the half-way point, Kenyo n d ropped off the fast pace just a mi te with Hocking looking very deliberate in his moves. Dave Lewis moved up to pass . Ron Kale and Steve Fos t er while Han sen was tr oubled by traff ic. On lap 16, Hockin g was ready to lap traffic and was stymied for one wh ole lap, allo wing Kenyon t o catch up, b u t b y n o me ans in a position to pass. On t he eigh teent h lap , Hockin g slipped by one rider an d was conten t to h ave so meone b etween himself and Ken yon. Ha nsen, runnin g in fifth , tried to get one mo re go ing b y start/fin ish bu t clipped a co urse marker, un lo ad in g heavily . T he final race of th e year was held today under clear, but co ld , skies near Murph y on the Sn ak e River. The fift y mil e h are scrambles event b rough t out eighty enthusiastic rid ers and was a great get-toge ther for the Owyhee Motorcy cle Club . En trants were prim arily fell ow s who ra ce motocross regularly at th e clubgrounds in Boise. T here wa s a sprinkling o f desert racin g-types an d even a few " ol d t im ers" . T he 13.2 mil e co urse was co m posed mostly o f san d trails a n d w ashes in dire ct c o ntras t to th e usual rocky terrain used in th e numero us cross-country events held a t Murphy. The race, basicall y a four lap motocross, go t underway at I I :00 a.m, with the different class es starting five minutes apart. With th e Op en ma chines California' . All Me_' Dirt Free_ay. Map. Scrambles. He chased th e bike for a while , but it escaped. getting off first, the 250's and 125 ' s were hard-pressed to gain much ground and it was eventual winner, Ken Medley bringing his Husky in first on th e in itial lap. Only a card punch and a gulp of water behind him was Boise fir eman, Dave Newell on a hard-running Pursan g. Bois e's Bru ce Harris was a steady t h ird with (SO T star t, Bill Uhl, sm o king his 12 5 Penton thro ugh heavy traffic to an over all fourth by th e end of th e first lap. Uhl got by Harris by th e en d of the second lap and was only a couple of m inutes behind Medley and Newell. Uhl 's lap ti mes w en t fro m 25 m in utes o n th e first lap to 2 4 on th e secon d to 23 on the third and t o a really j ammin ' 21 minu te s on the fin al to ur . Ha d th e race gone ano the r lap, Bill ma y have been able t o catch the lea ders, but it didn' t an d he couldn't. T he co urse fea ture d m an y sections of deep, de ep san d and the b ig-b or e mach in es were at a distin ct advan tage as Medley an d Newell fought a treme ndous duel for the lead. New ell rode th e last tw o lap s o n a flat fro nt tire and had his ex p an sion cham ber break in hal f bu t still clung ten aciously to the Husk y's draft. His determined ch arge w as for naught though, and Ken Medley's exh aus ted face w as th e fir st one seen a t th e fini sh. Nearly every one who st arted th e event fini sh ed the ra ce and spi rits w ere generally high re garding th is type o f happening. Most riders see med to enjoy runnin g a n e ven t which go t them h ome by 3 :3 0 in the afternoon and st ill made th em tired en ou gh to know th at they'd accom plished something. The Owy hee Club p lan s to h ave similar events later in the seaso n and in vite s all ride rs wh o like to r un a "fun " ra ce to come o n u p to Id ah o for a weekend.
