AI moved h is So nny Kenyon Bultaco right under the Bo rch fr am ed Ossa and appeared to have yet ano th er Dash in h is grasp, but Hockin g was havin g none o f th at. Rick got b y Eklund o n t he next turn a nd ca ugh t AI o n the white flag. Ex iting the firs t turn of th e last lap, Ri ck got ready fo r th e charge and, go ing into th e last tum, got a whee l under with a little shove. Ken yon , not going a long with th e game p lan, leaned back a might, so as to save hi m self, and both slid a little wid e, allo win g Ekl u nd t o go on b y for the c heckere d and ad o ra tio n fro m two lovel y mi sses . T he first five heat race re sults wouldn't surprise anyone with Eklund, Hocking , Kenyon and Gennai winning th eirs while Dave Hansen took th e fif t h on th e quick Ho nda one lunger, On the pole for the sixth heat was Y amaha Si lver c u p win ner Steve Hernandez riding his Mt. View A uto Stereo Bultaco. He was the obvious favorite to w in his heat b ut ca me in eighth with tro ubles galore leaving Nick Nazzi si, rid ing anothe r Steve Doi Bultaco, to the honors over Manuel Crummett. Somehow or other, Jerry Kole got in a n extra lap for the seventh heat but still ca me out th e winner ov er Harry Raggio a nd J im Odorn, while Steve Foster rode his CMS Produc ts Bultaco to win over Ron Kole . Bill Morgan took the nin th o ver Pat ~1 cC aul an d the Rempel Yamaha an d Bob Scally wo n th e tenth o ver T erry O tte n and a scram bl ing Bru ce Brown . That se t t he stage fo r the semis. With the first four going d irectly to the m ain , they w er e guaran teed thrillers. T he times for each even t became cri t ical then as they d e termin e who goes into what semi. AI Kenyon turned in the faste st heat and had th e pole in the first semi. He had to contend wi t h Hansen rig ht nex t to h im a nd just knowing how well that Honda come s off the line is a little nerv e-ra cking, but it didn't seem to bother the veteran indoor King and the Madison Square Garden vic tor o nc e again took t he chec ke red . Ha nsen took se co nd over McCa ul a n d Foster. T hose we re th e fir st four to the m ain. In th e second se m i, it was Ho ckin g, Eklund, Gennai an d Tard iff in to the first corner with Hock in g lead in g. Gennai an d Ek lu nd battle for a way s w ith Gennai ta k ing second a nd Eklu n d holding off a hard charge fro m R on Kol e, Seco nd se t of fo u r to th e main. Bob Scall e y, a n ine year p rofessional veteran, held o ff J erry Kol e, Da ve Lewis , an d Fenn Pervier, m aking hi s first pro m ain e ven t, This set th e stage fo r a grueling 20 lap main with no holds barred and money at th e ch ec kered, Bob Scally t urned in a fine performance. Hockin g's se mi win wa s the fastest b y nearly a second o ver Kenyon and over two seconds on Scally , but not quit e a record as set by Ken Roberts, so h e ha d the p ol e. Ken yon and Sc al ly lined u p alo ngsi de b ut Hansen , who had th e outside f ro n t row, was go ing to th e back. The reason w as an inc en tive m easure fro m p romo ter Bob Barkhimer. The previous week's m ain event wi nner could elec t to start in th e rear ro w , if he made it to the main, and get a S 100 rew ard . Ad d ing a lit tl e spice t o the sh o w. Of course, starting on t he o utside front row is almost like starting in the back , so it was no big deal , at leas t at tha t p oin t. Up goes t he green from starter Ho y Odo m an d it wa s Hoc kin g an d Scally in to th e first turn . Ken y on , Kole and the rest o f t he pack wen t in, b ut not all m ad e it o u t. T he red went out for a restar t. Second start, Ho ck in g agai n to ok th e lead but Ken y on got kn o cked off and McC aul had t o stop to avoi d running h im ov er . Once again , the red was o ut. Rick was lo oking a little grayer aro und the helm e t. The third try was successf ul with Hocking, Kenyon , Scall y an d the mob in train. Almost im m e d ia tely Hocking and Kenyon took o ff fr om th e pack while Scall y got o ff t he gr o ov e. Hansen moved in to seven th and picked his way through th e mas ses.
