Riding the 1/1 Oth mile co ncre te
fo r two full yea rs have left Rick
Ho ckin g mu tt ering to h imsel f
aboul how this just isn't h is tr ack .
Tonight, however, he proved
o therwise in a real k nockd own,
d rag-o ut evening o f ind oor racin g.
Hoc king is rated as o ne of the
top Junio rs in t he nation, but on th e
indo o r ci rcu it, he is just abo ut King.
T on igh t he ca m paigned h is Champion
Yam ah a t o the 20 la p feat ure wi n over
two CMS Produc ts-Bultacos un d er the
guid ance of Alle n Ken yo n an d Dave
Le wis, tw o very worth y ad versa ries .
Ti me t rials had shown Steve Ek lu n d
th e fast man for o ne la p wit h Hocking ,
K en y on a n d Ge n nai the othe r
co n test an ts. A new fea ture of this
indo o r sh o w sa w th e Dash co me up
first , as in th e a u to racing business. It is
a go o d id ea a nd the last two eve nts
reall y get th e spectators up.
Tonight's was no excep tio n. E klu nd ,
the new comer took th e jump wi th
Ken yon an d Hocking close an d Gennai
limpin g alo ng. AI moved h is So nny
Kenyon Bultaco right under the Bo rch
fr am ed Ossa and appeared to have yet
ano th er Dash in h is grasp, but Hockin g
was havin g none o f th at. Rick got b y
Eklund o n t he next turn a nd ca ugh t AI
o n the white flag. Ex iting the firs t turn
of th e last lap, Ri ck got ready fo r th e
charge and, go ing into th e last tum, got
a whee l under with a little shove.
Ken yon , not going a long with th e game
p lan, leaned back a might, so as to save
hi m self, and both slid a little wid e,
allo win g Ekl u nd t o go on b y for the
c heckere d and ad o ra tio n fro m two
lovel y mi sses .
T he first five heat race re sults
wouldn't surprise anyone with Eklund,
Hocking , Kenyon and Gennai winning
th eirs while Dave Hansen took th e fif t h
on th e quick Ho nda one lunger,
On the pole for the sixth heat was
Y amaha Si lver c u p win ner Steve
Hernandez riding his Mt. View A uto
Stereo Bultaco. He was the obvious
favorite to w in his heat b ut ca me in
eighth with tro ubles galore leaving Nick
Nazzi si, rid ing anothe r Steve Doi
Bultaco, to the honors over Manuel
Crummett.
Somehow or other, Jerry Kole got in
a n extra lap for the seventh heat but
still ca me out th e winner ov er Harry
Raggio a nd J im Odorn, while Steve
Foster rode his CMS Produc ts Bultaco
to win over Ron Kole . Bill Morgan took
the nin th o ver Pat ~1 cC aul an d the
Rempel Yamaha an d Bob Scally wo n
th e tenth o ver T erry O tte n and a
scram bl ing Bru ce Brown .
That se t t he stage fo r the semis. With
the first four going d irectly to the m ain ,
they w er e guaran teed thrillers.
T he times for each even t became
cri t ical then as they d e termin e who goes
into what semi. AI Kenyon turned in
the faste st heat and had th e pole in the
first semi. He had to contend wi t h
Hansen rig ht nex t to h im a nd just
knowing how well that Honda come s
off the line is a little nerv e-ra cking, but
it didn't seem to bother the veteran
indoor King and the Madison Square
Garden vic tor o nc e again took t he
chec ke red . Ha nsen took se co nd over
McCa ul a n d Foster. T hose we re th e fir st
four to the m ain.
In th e second se m i, it was Ho ckin g,
Eklund, Gennai an d Tard iff in to the
first corner with Hock in g lead in g.
Gennai an d Ek lu nd battle for a way s
w ith Gennai ta k ing second a nd Eklu n d
holding off a hard charge fro m R on
Kol e, Seco nd se t of fo u r to th e main.
Bob Scall e y, a n ine year p rofessional
veteran, held o ff J erry Kol e, Da ve
Lewis , an d Fenn Pervier, m aking hi s
first pro m ain e ven t,
This set th e stage fo r a grueling 20
lap main with no holds barred and
money at th e ch ec kered,
Bob Scally t urned in a fine performance.
Hockin g's se mi win wa s the fastest
b y nearly a second o ver Kenyon and
over two seconds on Scally , but not
quit e a record as set by Ken Roberts, so
h e ha d the p ol e. Ken yon and Sc al ly
lined u p alo ngsi de b ut Hansen , who had
th e outside f ro n t row, was go ing to th e
back. The reason w as an inc en tive
m easure fro m p romo ter Bob Barkhimer.
The previous week's m ain event wi nner
could elec t to start in th e rear ro w , if he
made it to the main, and get a S 100
rew ard . Ad d ing a lit tl e spice t o the
sh o w. Of course, starting on t he o utside
front row is almost like starting in the
back , so it was no big deal , at leas t at
tha t p oin t.
Up goes t he green from starter Ho y
Odo m an d it wa s Hoc kin g an d Scally
in to th e first turn . Ken y on , Kole and
the rest o f t he pack wen t in, b ut not all
m ad e it o u t. T he red went out for a
restar t. Second start, Ho ck in g agai n
to ok th e lead but Ken y on got kn o cked
off and McC aul had t o stop to avoi d
running h im ov er . Once again , the red
was o ut. Rick was lo oking a little grayer
aro und the helm e t.
The third try was successf ul with
Hocking, Kenyon , Scall y an d the mob
in train. Almost im m e d ia tely Hocking
and Kenyon took o ff fr om th e pack
while Scall y got o ff t he gr o ov e. Hansen
moved in to seven th and picked his way
through th e mas ses.
