The we ather was cle ar with a light breeze, and max imum temperat ure w as 84 degree F a ft er a lo w of 52 degree F . A time schedule, generally adhered t o , was given to each participant at the start and is attac hed . Th e test per iod was fro m 11 :14 to 11:29 . Backgro und ievels on Sunday, October 14, ranged from 4 3 down to 38 dBA . When tra il bikes beg an operat ing the readings ranged from 38 up to 52 dBA . During the 25 minute test period t he closest a bi ke came to the microphone w as 1800 feet . A pass ing ai rcraft regist er ed a ma ximum readi ng of 58 dBA . Location Two A bark ing dog withi n 50 feet of the microph o ne grea t ly a ffected th e read ings on September 11 . The d BA levels varied from 36 to 69 . When the dog finally q uieted d own the upper limi t reduced to 46 dBA . Th is reco rding was made from 12 :13 to 12 :28 w ith a light breeze . On Sunday , October 14 , virt ually all the bac kground level readi ngs ranged from 36 to 45 dBA . Again the test pe riod was 25 minutes. When a tra il b ike a p pea red on Ponderosa Way abo ut 350 feet fro m the mic rophone the sound leve l rose to 52 dBA . The sound level rose to 53 dBA alter a biker reached the end of a trail about 950 feet away in a heavily wooded area at th e right-of-way line and depa rted back a long the same ro ut e . THE HODARA COMBAT 125MX Loca t io n Th ree Read ings from 37 to 43 d8A were typical on Tuesday , September 11 . Only test person ne l act ivity an d a nearby bird caused a ny act ivit y ex ceed ing t his range. Trai l bikes were in o pe rat io n but were no closer t ha n 1000 feet , across the North Fork canyon on Po nd erosa Way . Twice, a n aircraft passed overhead . contributing to the ma xim um level. The test period was 18 minutes. Location F ive Min imum read ings on Tuesday, Se ptember 11, were 34 dBA. A pickup truck on t he steep dirt road in the ca nyon below , 60 0 feet and further away, caused 50 dBA read ings. The ubiquitous chirping birds incr ea sed sound leve ls to 49 dBA . Read ings we re taken from 1 :40 to 1 :54 p .rn. On S und ay , October 1 4 , the mi nim um sound level reached was 37 d8 A. With a sma ll child play ing in t he ar ea , a 63 dB A ma ximu m level w as recorded . From t ime to time tra il b ikes w ere o bserved in t he d ista nce but t hei r eff ects on t he recorded sou nd leve ls could no t be identified .
