.I • ~ t ~ r-- O'l ~ ~ 00 C til ::5 ~ ~ 8addleback trials Announcing: Continued from page 20 dealer showrooJDI, was developed by '72 Champion Mick Andrews, who won the title for Ossa. The four-man team of Americans riding for Yamaha in the Saddleback event are joe GuglielmeUi, Don Sweet, Kerk Mayfield and Bob Hopkins. The debut of the Suzuki entry will have Englishman Gordon Farley aboard, who was formerly a top rider for the Montesa factory. The Kawasaki trialer, reduced to 250cc from its original displacement of 450, will be piloted by its developer, England's Don Smith. In the recent first-ever japanese national championship, a Kawasaki finished second, two marks behind the winning Yamaha. As is their tradition, the japanese have enlisted the aid of the best European riders to create some trials iron. But the similarity to other forms of competition recently mastered by the japanese ends there. Because trials performance has little to do with horsepower, and nothing at all to do with high speed, any number of machines with the requisite torque and turning radius can perform the tricks of trialing, given the right rider. I f motocross is 90% rider and 10% machine, trials is 99% rider. Hang in there, Tokyo. The coune for America's fmt international trials is nine miles long and includes 20 sections, each of which must be ridden four times. The Saddleback folks have arranged for spectator parking near some of the more remote sections. This will allow fans to view several types of challenging terrain. If you have never witnessed an international trials event, we urge you to attend this one. And if you have any uninitiated friends who scoff at most forms of motorcycle competition, drag them out to Saddleback for a relaxing day of watching the ballet masters of motorcycling. Your friends will be amazed. # Cycle News awardfof Outstanding AchieveIIlent to J 0 EROY & Bu taco International Ltd.
